Burnout: Coaching Burnout with Low Morale/Motivation on the Team
Green Light: Let’s Get Going
1. When somebody is burnt out, you want to be as sensitive as possible. Ask somebody to list things they love to do inside the job and outside the job, even socially if they’re willing. This helps gain an understanding of leverage points where you can create some enjoyment that will offset burnout, which is typically a result of being overworked or fatigued. 2. If somebody shows an interest in a sport or an activity, try to facilitate application of those things even during work hours to help offset the burnout. For example, decorate their offices with a team’s flag or banner, or create some fun activity around their interest.
Yellow Light: Needs Attention
1. Again, be sensitive when somebody is feeling fatigued or has low morale due to being burnt out because you don’t want to come across as insensitive and makes things worse. Introduce the concept of resilience. 2. Introduce resiliencies, a person’s ability to overcome difficult times by immediate positive reactions and sustainable actions that produce desirable results. Introduce the definition of resilience and ask them what they can do right now to resemble that definition.
Red Light: Needs Immediate Attention
1. One of the thankless jobs of being a leader is coaching people when they are burnt out knowing there are projects and work that still need to be completed. Use reflective coaching in a thoughtful manner knowing that time is short by doing the following: I understand how you’re feeling and where you are currently, and with that understanding, what can you do especially from a resilience perspective to overcome those difficult emotions so we can maintain progress as it relates to the following projects? After introducing the statement in question, give them time to think about it and thank them immensely by continually acknowledging how they feel. It may come off like you’re introducing the objection of being burnt out, yet if you don’t acknowledge it, you’re taking an even bigger risk.
