Skill Gaps: How to Coach Skill Gaps
Green Light: Let’s Get Going
1. Use a whiteboard coaching exercise such as: Create three columns on a whiteboard (can be achieved digitally as well): column 1 is for their current level of skills; and column 3 is their desired set of skills. Fill up those columns after asking them questions specific to where they are currently and where they need to be. 2. Then ask them to identify the gaps between columns 1 and 3, and this will create an apparatus to go forward with the person(s) who are coaching. 3. Column 2 are the actions they need to take to go from skills in column 1 to the desired skills in column 3. Have them fill it in (they could take a few days to accomplish between coaching sessions).
Yellow Light: Needs Attention
1. Assuming you have done the first activity, coach to those skill gaps identified between columns 1 and 3. Once you have identified the skill gaps with the person(s) you are coaching, especially on a whiteboard, mark a K or S by each one. K stands for knowledge and requires training. S stands for skill and you will have to facilitate practice and repetition sessions with them to address those specific skills.
Red Light: Needs Immediate Attention
1. Assuming you have done the previous 2 activities and knowing that the gaps are not being addressed as readily as you would like, increase the cadence of the training and practice using peers or people willing to help.
