Top Talent: Limited Promotion Spots
Green Light: Let’s Get Going
1. When it comes to limited promotional spots, it’s vital you understand the person’s motivator specific to where they want to end up. It’s always difficult doing activities with people when you cannot provide them the opportunities they seek. 2. Use a whiteboard or paper and ask them to identify what they love about their current job, what they like, and what they dislike. 3. After the activity is completed, you now have a visual representation of what you need to coach to, and you can provide more opportunities in what they love and like and take off their plate as much as possible what they dislike. This buys time more than anything.
Yellow Light: Needs Attention
1. Ask them to identify their desired state specific to where they want to end up, and what they specifically want to be doing. Have them write it down. 2. If the person(s) being coached is worth the effort and are top talent, carve out time to develop those areas to position them for promotional spots, knowing they may eventually become available. This is using coaching in the moment for future opportunities and creates greater mindshare with them.
Red Light: Needs Immediate Attention
1. When you have top talent it may not need immediate attention yet your immediate attention can maintain your top talent and the critical component is to make sure you’re not doing it at the expense of them for your own personal gain. This is a tough balancing act.
