Empathy: Coaching

Green Light: Let’s Get Going

1. Share the definition of empathy such as: acknowledging the emotions and feelings of other people and their potential impacts that they might be having on them and to truly listen with great care to those feelings. 2. After sharing this definition, ask the person(s) you are coaching what they do well and where they have an opportunity to improve specific to this type of definition of empathy. Have them write it down.

Yellow Light: Needs Attention

1. Empathy conversations will require repetition and practice. We advise to increase the number of practice sessions early on along with positive reinforcement just for their efforts. 2. Have them practice and journal on a weekly basis one conversation they have where they practiced empathy successfully. Have them share that experience from their journal each week for 12 to 16 weeks.

Red Light: Needs Immediate Attention

1. Along with the yellow light activities above, increase the cadence of learning by creating a group of leaders that can also practice with one another outside of your direct coaching conversations. This group coaching approach will accelerate people’s willingness and visibility to such conversations.
