Emotional Intelligence

Green Light: Let’s Get Going

1. Have the individual write down the 5 tenants of emotional intelligence: self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, motivation, and social skills. 2. Then, next week have them come in with two examples where they demonstrated one of those tenants in a thoughtful and professional way, and what success they experienced from them. They can pick any of the 5 tenants, and ideally pick one of the areas they are strongest in, and 1 area they need more focus in. 3. Then the next week, have them come in with 1 example of where they demonstrated another tenant of emotional intelligence, different from the previous week, and what steps they could take moving forward to improve a tenant they need more focus in.

Yellow Light: Needs Attention

1. Knowing we need to improve our emotional intelligence specific to self-awareness (or self-regulation, empathy, motivation, or social skills, wherever they need focus), next week come in with two examples where you demonstrated that skill in a thoughtful and professional way, and what successes you experienced. 2. Keeping in mind we need to improve our grasp and understanding of emotional intelligence specific to (whatever area they need focus in from one of the 5 tenants), next week come in with 1 specific example where you struggled with that area, and what specific steps you’ll take moving forward to handle it better. Include what barriers were impacting your ability to be more self-aware (or whatever area they are focusing on), and steps we can take to remove those barriers.

Red Light: Needs Immediate Attention

1. Self-awareness (or whichever of the 5 tenants of emotional intelligence they need the most focus in) is a key component of progress and success. Knowing we need to improve our self-awareness (or whichever tenant they need most help in) in a very short time period, come in tomorrow with two specific examples where you demonstrated that skill in a thoughtful and professional way that resulted in success. 2. Tomorrow, come in with 1 specific example where you struggled to demonstrate a tenant of emotional intelligence, and what specific steps you’re going to take very quickly to improve your ability to improve that area that will lead you to success in the future. 3. Assign them a mentor or a peer-to-peer coach who they can discuss and practice with on the tenants of emotional intelligence they are struggling in, asking what the mentor or peer does in certain situations specific to emotional intelligence. This mentor or peer coach will help the person practice situations to help improve that area.
