Motivation
Green Light: Let’s Get Going
1. Have the person(s) you’re coaching write down the 4 kinds of motivation: intrinsic vs extrinsic, and relationship or independent driven.(Intrinsic is motivated by the job and process improvement, Extrinsic is motivated by upward movement in the job, Relationship driven prefers teamwork and collaborating, Independent driven prefers to work alone.) Have them think about these 4 different kinds and write down which of those types apply to them and why. 2. Next week come in and share where you want to end up in your career and what you would like to be doing more of. What areas do you want to learn more about for your future development? Write them down. 3. Next week come in and share what steps you can take and are willing to take to do more of the things you like and learn the things you want to learn.
Yellow Light: Needs Attention
1. Knowing we need to improve our overall motivation and find what drives you to succeed and feel valued, next week come back with two specific examples of where you felt highly motivated in a task or project or relationship at work, and the success you experienced because of it. Identify which of 4 types of motivators these examples fit into. 2. Knowing that we need to up our game on being motivated to succeed and provide value in your professional development, come in next week and share 1 specific example of where you lacked the motivation necessary to complete a task, project, or engage in a cooperative relationship at work, along with the reason why. 3. Identify the barriers keeping you from feeling motivated to succeed, and ways we can help areas that you feel would increase your motivation. 4. What specific steps are you going to take moving forward to make you feel more motivated to succeed and feel valued? Write them down.
Red Light: Needs Immediate Attention
1. Knowing we need to improve our overall motivation and discover what really drives you to succeed in a really short time period, come in tomorrow with one or two specific examples of what you’re not enjoying in your role today and what you’d like to be doing less of, and two specific examples of what you’d like to be doing more of that you’re not doing enough of now. Explain why for each one. 2. Tomorrow, come in with ideas on ways we can expand the things you’d like to be doing more of in your role that you enjoy, and how we can positively address the things that you don’t like doing as much.
