Progress
Green Light: Let’s Get Going
1. Have the person(s) you’re coaching write down their definition of progress and what it looks like in relation to the area they would like to develop more. 2. After they’ve completed the first step, ask them to come in next week and share two examples where they feel they’ve shown great progress in, and the success they experienced because of it. Compare that to the definition they wrote earlier. 3. Ask them to share 1 area they would like to progress more in that they believe they could use more focus, compare that to their earlier definition, and what steps they’re going to take to address that area.
Yellow Light: Needs Attention
1. Knowing we need to improve our overall progress in (whatever area they are focusing on), next week come back with two specific examples of where you feel you’ve progressed quite well, and the success you experienced because of it. Compare those to the definition we wrote down earlier. 2. Knowing that we need to make more headway in progressing in (whatever area they are focusing on), come in next week and share 1 specific example of where your progress missed the mark a bit and wasn’t where you’d like it to be or it should’ve been, and compare that to the definition you made earlier. 3. What specific steps are you going to take moving forward to increase the cadence of your progress? Write them down. 4. Write down any barriers that are keeping you from making the progress you’d like or should be making, and brainstorm ways to help remove or mitigate those barriers.
Red Light: Needs Immediate Attention
1. Knowing we need to increase our progress in (whatever area they are focusing on) in a really short time period, come in tomorrow with two specific examples where you feel you’ve made great progress, and what success you experienced because of it. Remind them of the definition they crafted earlier. 2. Bring in 1 specific example where your progress missed the mark and wasn’t where it should’ve been or where you’d like it to be, and what specific actions you’re going to take in the immediate future to increase the cadence of that progress in a very short time period. 3. Identify what barriers are currently keeping you from improving your progress in (whatever area they are focusing on), and how can we help you remove those barriers? Write them down.
