Green Light: Let’s Get Going

1. Have the person(s) you’re coaching write down the power of self-propelled development and how it can personally benefit them in relation to the area they would like to develop more. Include what they’re willing to do specific to self-development going forward to improve and achieve success. 2. After they’ve completed the first step, ask them to come in next week and share two examples where they feel they’ve taken more proactive steps in self-development or shown great self- development initiative, and the success they experienced because of it. Compare that to the earlier benefit they wrote in the first step. 3. Ask them to share 1 area they would like to devote more emphasis on self-development where they believe they could use more focus, compare that to their statement from step 1, and what steps they’re going to take to address that area.

Yellow Light: Needs Attention

1. Knowing we need to improve our overall willingness to self-development in (whatever area they are focusing on), next week come back with two specific examples of where you successfully owned your own self-development and took more initiative in, and the success you experienced because of it. Compare those to the earlier statement they wrote above about the benefits they receive from self-development. 2. Knowing that we need to take more initiative in self-development in (whatever area they are focusing on), come in next week and share 1 specific example of where you need to place more emphasis on self-development, and compare that to the earlier statement you made in step 1 (green light). 3. What specific steps are you going to take moving forward to increase your self-development and take initiative to own that? Write them down. 4. Write down any barriers that are keeping you from focusing on your self-development in that area, and brainstorm ways to help remove or mitigate those barriers.

Red Light: Needs Immediate Attention

1. Knowing we need to improve our self-development in (whatever area they need focus on) in a really short time period, come in tomorrow with two specific examples where you took the positive initiative to develop your skills in (whatever area they need focus on), and what success you experienced because of it. Explain how that benefited you in your role. 2. Tomorrow bring in 1 specific example where you feel you need to place more emphasis on your self-development, why that would be beneficial to your current role, and what specific actions you’re going to take in the immediate future to increase your emphasis on that area of self-development. 3. Identify how we can help you remove the barriers that you feel are keeping you from focusing on that area of self-development. Write them down and bring them in to our next meeting tomorrow.
