Trust

Green Light: Let’s Get Going

1. Ask the person(s) you’re coaching to write down their definition of trust and what traits someone exhibits that meets that expectation. Add to their definition to include things you think are important as well specific to trust. Agree on that definition. Have them write down the strengths they have in relation to that definition, and one area they have an opportunity to improve their trust, and what they would like to see from others in trust. 2. After they’ve completed the first step, ask them to come in next week and share two examples where they demonstrated trust (compare to the definition), and the success they experienced because of it. 3. Ask them to share 1 area they feel they need an opportunity to improve in relation to trust (compare to the definition), and what steps they’re going to take to address that area.

Yellow Light: Needs Attention

1. Knowing we need to improve our overall trust and considering how important trust is for progress and success overall, next week come back with two specific examples of where you demonstrated great trust, and the success you experienced because of it. Compare those to the definition we wrote earlier. 2. Knowing we need to improve our overall trust in a relatively short time frame, since trust is a critical component of having success, come in next week and share 1 specific example of where you missed the mark a little on showing trust or being trustworthy, and compare that to the definition we made earlier. Identify what steps you’re going to take to positively address that. Write them down. 3. Identify and write down any barriers that are keeping you from meeting the expectations of trust in our definition, and brainstorm ways to help remove or mitigate those barriers.

Red Light: Needs Immediate Attention

1. Knowing we need to improve our trust overall in a really short time period, and that we’ve already been trying to work on this for some time, come in tomorrow with two specific examples of actions you took that demonstrated great trust in a thoughtful and professional way in relation to our definition of trust, and what success you experienced because of it. 2. Bring in 1 specific example where your action didn’t meet the expectations for trust, and what specific actions you’re going to take in the immediate future to increase the cadence of improving your overall trust in a very short time period. 3. Identify what barriers are currently keeping you from feeling trusted or being trusted by others, and how we can help you remove those barriers. Write them down.
