Lacking Accountability
Green Light: Let’s Get Going
1. Ask the person(s) you’re coaching to write the definition of accountability. Add to their definition to include things you think are important as well specific to accountability and agree on that definition. Have them write down the strengths they have that match the definition and identify one trait on the list they have an opportunity to improve in themselves. 2. After they’ve completed the first step, ask them to come in next week and share two examples where they demonstrated high accountability and the success they experienced because of it. Compare that example to the definition created in step 1. 3. Ask them to share 1 trait from that list that they struggled with or have an opportunity to improve in relation to taking initiative, and what steps they’re going to take to address that area.
Yellow Light: Needs Attention
1. Knowing we need to increase our overall accountability, next week come back with two specific examples of where you held yourself highly accountable, and the success you experienced because of it. Compare that to the definition we created. 2. Knowing we need to improve our overall accountability in a relatively short time frame, come in next week and share 1 specific example of where you missed the mark a little on holding yourself accountable, and what steps you’re going to take to positively address that. Write them down.
Red Light: Needs Immediate Attention
1. Knowing we need to improve our overall accountability in a really short time period, and that we’ve already been trying to work on this for some time, come in tomorrow with two specific examples where you held yourself accountable in a thoughtful and professional way (related to the definition we created), and what success you experienced because of it. 2. Bring in 1 specific example where your action didn’t meet the expectations for someone who shows great accountability, and what specific actions you’re going to take in the immediate future to hold yourself more accountable in a positive way in a very short time period. 3. Identify and write down any barriers that are keeping you from taking more accountability and meeting the expectations of that definition we created, and brainstorm ways to help remove or mitigate those barriers.
