Skill Gaps: How to Coach Skill Gaps
Green Light: Let’s Get Going
1. Write down all the skills needed to complete a task or project (whatever task/ project specific to what they need to focus on) on paper or digitally. 2. Come in next week and share two strengths you demonstrated that match up to that task list, and the success you experienced because of it. 3. Next week, share 1 skill from this list that you feel you have an opportunity to improve or learn and place more focus on, and what steps you are going to take to address that.
Yellow Light: Needs Attention
1. Knowing we need to improve some of the skills needed to complete this task/ project, come in next week with strengths you demonstrated recently that fulfills the skills needed for that, and what success you experienced because of those. 2. Knowing we have a relatively short time period to improve some of the skills needed to complete this task/project, come in next week with 1 skill from that list we identified earlier that you have an opportunity to improve relatively quickly, and what steps you’re going to take to achieve that.
Red Light: Needs Immediate Attention
1. Knowing we need to improve the skills necessary to complete this task/project in a really short time period, and we’ve already been trying to work on this for some time, come in tomorrow with two specific strengths you have that fulfills that need, and what success you experienced because of it. 2. Bring in 1 specific skill from that list we identified where you have an opportunity to improve to meet the needs of that project/task, and what specific actions you’re going to take in the immediate future to improve that skill. 3. What barriers are currently keeping you from working on that skill and improving them, and how can we help you remove or address those barriers?
