Top Talent: Limited Promotion Spots
Green Light: Let’s Get Going
1. Next week come in and share three things you love about your current role and what strengths you have that make that so enjoyable/effective for you. 2. Next week come in and share what paths you are interested in pursuing, and where you see yourself ending up (the ideal job). Describe what strengths you currently have that make you a good fit for that, and what areas you have an opportunity to improve that the role would require. 3. Research and find the certifications or trainings you feel would be beneficial to helping you address the areas you have an opportunity to improve. Include these in a self-development plan that focuses on what you need to accomplish for your target ideal role. The self- development plan should include a loose timeline.
Yellow Light: Needs Attention
1. Assign a mentor that can help address the areas the person(s) you are coaching needs to improve to be better prepared for a promotional advancement in the future. Have them meet biweekly or monthly and keep a journal of what they’re learning and improving upon. 2. Ask them to create a presentation to teach you (and their peers) about the new skills they are learning that will help them improve and be better prepared for any promotional opportunities in the future. This shows how effective the learning project is at being able to practice the new skills they need. 3. Follow up with them on the certifications and trainings they identified in the first step to include in their personal development plan that are actively addressing the areas they identified they had an opportunity to improve. See where they are on their timeline and make adjustments as needed (perhaps they identified more skills they didn’t realize they needed for their ideal role — address those).
