Presentations/ Public Speaking Skills
Green Light: Let’s Get Going
1. Next week come in and share two examples of where you were comfortable and or successful in a presentation or speaking in front of others, and the success you experienced because of it. 2. Next week come in and share 1 example of where you struggled with a presentation or speaking in front of others, and why they felt uncomfortable or why it wasn’t as successful as they’d hoped. Write down specific actions you can take moving forward to improve on those areas. 3. For the next week, practice a presentation (or conversation) in two-to-three-minute increments and record yourself (via smartphone or Zoom). Review those recordings and identify areas you feel you can improve and how to address them.
Yellow Light: Needs Attention
1. Knowing we need to improve our public speaking skills or presentation skills in a relatively short time frame, ask a trusted peer to help you practice your presentation (or conversation) and to provide feedback on 2 things you did well and 1 thing you have an opportunity to practice more. (You could also share your recordings from the previous smartphone/Zoom practice sessions and ask them to provide the same feedback from those.) 2. What specific actions are you going to take moving forward to improve on the areas identified by your trusted peer and from your own personal practice recordings? Write them down.
Red Light: Needs Immediate Attention
1. Knowing we need to improve our public speaking skills and presentation skills in a really short time period, come in tomorrow with two specific things you do very well in your public speaking (or presentation) that you are more comfortable doing, and what success you experienced because of it. 2. Bring in 1 example where you feel you’re struggling when it comes to your public speaking skills or presentation skills, and what specific actions you’re going to take in the immediate future to improve that. 3. What barriers are currently keeping you from improving these skills in a quick manner, and how can we help you remove or address those barriers?
