Coaching (Managing) Up

Green Light: Let’s Get Going

1. Write down the things you are concerned about or want to share with upper-level management on paper or digitally with the intention to provide visibility (not from a place of judgment, criticism, or pointing out what they are doing wrong). The purpose is to provide perspective and visibility in a productive manner. 2. Introduce Permission + the Sword method. Have them write down the following phrase in front of each concern they wrote down: “Would you mind if I shared with you a few opportunities where I think the team can raise its game and where I think we’re having some struggles, and the last thing I want to do is assume what you know or don’t know, so my objective is to provide visibility.” (This shows the more thoughtful approach that most upper-level management would welcome.)

Yellow Light: Needs Attention

1. On each of the things you wrote that concern you or you want to share with upper- level management, come up with 1 or 2 ideas for each of those things of ways they can be addressed or improved (again, not from a place of judgment or criticism or pointing out what they are doing wrong). The purpose is to provide perspective, visibility and to be helpful. 2. Practice saying the words in the Permission + the Sword mentioned in green light and pairing it with the items on this list you wrote.

Red Light: Needs Immediate Attention
