Suggestions to Start

1. An off-the-beaten-path activity is to have the person take some time to reflect and ask them to complete an activity on their own and send it to you germane to: What do they love about their current job? What do they like about their current job, and what would they like to have taken off their plate specific to their current job? This insight will give you some leverage of what you can do to maintain this top talent while maintaining a focus on developing them for eventual promotional opportunities. 2. Once this activity is done, have the person create their own self- development plan focusing on what they need to do for their target promotional opportunity they want to seek, and have them create a communication strategy of what they’re doing to pursue improvement to position themselves.

More Aggressive Suggestions

1. When somebody is lacking a promotional opportunity, this has a profound impact on their psyche. A mentor is a great activity. This shows trust in your behalf and your willingness to find someone who can invest in them, and this buys you some time while also creating greater perspective for the person(s) you are coaching.
