Presentations/ Public Speaking Skills
Suggestions to Start
1. One of the things that terrifies people is public speaking and the following activity is one that somebody can do on their own. Have the person speak into a microphone and present various parts of a presentation they have to deliver. This can be done in short segments with each segment asking the person(s) you are coaching to identify what they felt they did well and why they felt a little more comfortable. These questions are critical as it starts to reframe their confidence with public speaking. 2. The momentum of doing these self recordings creates greater skills as well, even though they’re doing it on their own and not in front of a group.
More Aggressive Suggestions
1. Use peer-to-peer coaching (be very careful with the peers). They must provide feedback in a very structured and thoughtful manner. The recommendation is to ask peers to provide feedback in doses of three strengths and then introduce where they can improve 1 thing as an opportunity. This is absolutely critical to the success of this activity. If somebody says that was pretty good, that can have a negative long- term effect and can be counterproductive to what we are trying to achieve. Schedule and have them demonstrate to you how they go about scheduling their prioritizations. Again, this will be very revealing.
