Self-Awareness

Suggestions to Start

1. When it comes to self-awareness, it’s been estimated that 80 to 85% of people significantly lack self-awareness (Tasha Eurich). With that statistic as an introduction, ask the person(s) you are coaching via e-mail (not in person) the following questions: What is one word you would describe yourself as a teammate? What is one word your teammates would describe you as a teammate? What is 1 area you exhibit positive teamwork? What is 1 area honestly where you could exhibit greater teamwork? 2. These questions start the process of self-awareness and self discovery.

More Aggressive Suggestions

1. A great book to read is Insights by Tasha Eurich. She really stresses and tells great stories (especially in the audiobook) of what self-awareness is and what people can do to discover it. It’s a lengthy read, yet it’s a valuable read so choose parts of it carefully. You may want to have people read the first three or four chapters where she exhibits some great stories that reveals where people lack self-awareness and have people in groups of two or three review the chapters and what they learned about themselves as a result of the reading. 2. No matter the activity, three great questions to always ask when it comes to self-awareness are: What did you learn? What did you learn about yourself that you were positively committed to improving? What positive steps are you going to take from an action perspective based on those learnings?
