Empathy: Coaching

Suggestions to Start

1. Find the definition of empathy and send it to the person(s) you’re coaching. Ask them to highlight the areas they feel they do well in one color, and then highlight in another color the areas where they feel they have an opportunity to improve within the definition. 2. Then ask them to share with you the specific actions they’re going to take to continue to focus on empathy and truly improve their ability to be more empathetic.

More Aggressive Suggestions

1. When we acknowledge other people’s feelings and what they are going through, it is critical we do this thoughtfully and sensitively (this is usually not second-nature to everybody.) Set up peer-to-peer practice sessions where people inquire and ask questions and truly listen without interruption or disruption, while acknowledging someone else’s feelings. This application of practice, especially when rotating peers, is to partner with one another and accelerate empathy within the team and organization.
