BODE

(upset) My lawyer said we’d be going to a different camp. FREDDY Who cares where it is? It’s better than where we’ve been. Here you go, Picasso.

Freddy hands back the notebook, but Bode barely registers. He stares out the window, his expression haunted, as the bus passes a sign that says, “Middletown - 23 miles.”

EXT. MIDDLETOWN, CA - DAY 12 A ragtag parade makes its way down Main Street. Majorettes lead the Middletown High School Band who manage to play a decent version of “California Dreamin’” by The Mamas and the Papas. Right behind the band is the parade’s main event - a vintage firetruck with a banner reading, “ARABELLA ROBLES, MIDDLETOWN’S OLYMPIAN”, driven by MANNY ROBLES (45, exudes the hard-earned wisdom of a guy whose life sucked before he turned it around). Riding on top of the truck and waving to the gathered crowds is ARABELLA ROBLES (24, Middletown’s reluctant golden girl and Manny’s daughter). Manny calls out to neighbors and friends as he drives by. MANNY Hey Julia!/ Tom, glad you could make it!/ Proud papa moment for sure./ Mr. Mayor ... The truck passes the corrections van, stuck in traffic, waiting for the parade to pass by.

INT. DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS VAN - DAY

The inmates watch the parade pass -- CORY (explaining)

She got fourteenth place in the Olympics last summer in diving. She lives in Florida and is heading back so they wanted to give her a big send off. FREDDY (incredulous) You get a parade for 14th place in this town?
