It was used for the construction of fortifications and shelters, cooking, and the construction/repair of wagons and cais- sons. Wood was even used to surface roads. Trees were also cleared to provide “fields of fire” for both rifles and artillery. Civil War armies on the march were notorious for tearing down fences and even houses for fire wood. Trees stood little chance of surviving a lengthy encampment. To under- stand how this affected Fort Richardson and the land now occupied by Army Navy Country Club, please click here.
