DECEMBER 2023 CANDLELIGHT VIGIL
On December 7th, 2023, MADD Upper Midwest hosted a Virtual Candlelight Vigil to honor victim-survivors of impaired driving crashes, remember those who have been lost, and raise awareness of this 100% preventable crime. Throughout the day, we shared eleven victim tributes of individuals who have been impacted by impaired driving crashes. These tributes were written and provided by loved ones with photos to be shared. Over 50 luminaries, tokens of remembrance, memory cards, candles, etc., were mailed to participants who joined us for the virtual event throughout the day. During this Event, the Vigil content was widely shared across our 3-state Region receiving nearly 1,500 views, hundreds of engagements and shares.

You and our many other volunteers are the lifeblood of MADD—full of passion and compassion for our mission. We value your commitment and connection to those we couldn’t save, to those we have, and to those we can. The Advisory Board provides the framework and support for MADD in our region to grow and serve more victims and prevent these 100% preventable crashes. The Advisory Board is designed not only to provide strategic leadership and guidance to local MADD programs and services, but also serves to build capacity through increased volunteer activity and revenue generation. The MADD Upper Midwest Victim Services Team is humbled by the wonderful amount of participation and were deeply honored to have been able to host this event! Thank you again to all who participated in this touching day of remembrance, honoring, and awareness, and to those who joined us live for our Memory Moment at 7pm that evening, for the lighting and extinguishing of the candles. Also a special Thank you to musical artist Hayley Joelle for graciously allowing us permission to use her song, “Memory Lane” throughout the Vigil.

SNOWMOBILING SAFETY CAMPAIGN
We want to stay in touch with you! You can follow us on several social media platforms. MADD will frequently post what is happening on our social media. Like, follow, and interact to get the latest updates on all things MADD.
MADD is partnering up with various State Agencies in Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin, to launch the first annual Snowmobile Safety Campaign to kick off the winter recreation season while promoting safety and and educating the public about the dangers of operating a snowmobile while impaired by alcohol and drugs. Snowmobiling is a great way to get out and enjoy the outdoors during the winter months. The long winters attract many people to take part — but there’s one hard truth: drinking alcohol and/or consuming drugs and riding don’t mix. According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, during the 2021-2022 season, there were 122 snowmobile accidents, 6 fatalities, and 90 injuries.
