What the French government wants are more healthly fathers instead of the absinthe-sipping boulevardiers in postwar France. When will nations learn that the path of national health and growth is built upon the principles of the Bible? Ruin is inevitable when men or nations turn from God and righteousness. We ask why thinking statesmen of America do not study this situation and legislate accordingly. - ♦ Very significant is the report of a survey conducted by the American Council of Education on successful marriage. The conclusion is reached that a determining factor is the re ligious unity of the home. It was found that when both parents were Catholic, 6.4% of the homes were broken; where both were Protestant, there were 6. 8%, but in the instances of marriages between Catholics and Protestants the figure rose to 15.2%. When questions relating to religion are not settled before marriage, there is little likelihood of agreement after ward. This is a good illustration of the reason for insistence upon re ligious unity in marriage. ♦ We thank God for a new soldiers’ organization which has just been born. It is called “The National Christian Veterans of America” and its purpose is to spread the gospel of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ through out the world by every possible means. To those of us who have ob served the antics of other veterans’ organizations, especially while en gaged in their conventions, it is re freshing to know that there will be a Christian Legion to which born- again American soldiers will be wel come. The headquarters of this new organization are to b e . in Los An geles, with individual chapters in vari ous cities. Surely this fine move ment deserves the support, not only of all Christian soldiers, but of the en tire Christian population of our be loved America. [ Continued on Page 196]

population nearer.to God, but at least there could be an official expression to the effect that when we say, “In God We Trust,” we mean it. ♦ Time magazine is usually accurate in its figures. Recently it has been carrying in its columns reports deal ing with the mounting controversy between Protestantism and Catholi cism. The political might of the Rom an Catholic Church is well known. It has been claimed that Catholics num ber up to forty per cent of our popu lation; Time reports that this per centage might be sixteen plus. This is more nearly correct, and the ad vertisement of this fact should go a long way to dispel the fear of the political power of the Roman Church that is felt in many circles. ♦ We see from the pages of Fortune magazine that there are one hundred and ninety-seven organizations mak ing plans for the postwar world. Many of these are unselfishly ex hibiting true altruism and genuine concern for the mass of humanity. God also has a plan for the postwar world. If the Church of Jesus Christ had measured up to its priceless op portunity of executing this plan, the world today would not be in the con dition in which it finds itself. God’s plan is a simple one—it is all bound up in His Son. Receiving Christ into the heart makes one a “new creature.” Old things pass away, including those evil desires which inevitably result in war and bloodshed. New individuals make new nations, and new nations make a new world. But we are not deceived: the church at large is fail ing, and will continue to fail, and in His good time God will end the church’s sojourn on earth. Then on a day of His own choosing, He will send His Son fully provided with divine plans for a new world and power to execute them. God hasten the day! ♦ It appears that a nation must be brought to the brink of suicide before it is willing to forego its life-draining pleasures. The DeGaulle government in France, noting the alarming decline

A sad commentary on the evils af fecting the American home today is the report of the Journal of the Amer ican Medical Association on the ratio of female to male alcoholic addiction. In 1931 there was one woman addict to five men, but in 1943 the ratio had changed to one to two. Surely one of the most alarming indications of a declining civilization is the demoral ization of its womanhood. Would that America were really concerned at this alarming condition! There is deep need for prayer on the part of Chris tian people. Let us ask God to roll back the forces of evil and to pre serve our civilization insofar as it pleases Him. ♦ The Union Signal, official organ of the W.C.T.U., notes on its front page that in China the Ministry of Food has petitioned the government for a ban on the manufacture and sale of alcoholic liquor. It is interesting to remember the statistics given a short time ago, showing that, while in re lation to the whole of Chinese popu lation the Christians numbered less than three per cent, in the new gov ernment the Christians were holding about fifty per cent of the offices. If Christ delays His coming, it will be extremely interesting to watch the progress of postwar China. ♦ Time magazine reports a resolution introduced in Congress by a represen tative from California, requesting that the days between Thanksgiving and Christmas be designated as a time for nation-wide Bible reading. The rea son given for this was the desire for an official stamp illustrating that our national motto, “In God We Trust” is an actuality in the United States. We have frequently called atten tion to the inconsistency of many Americans who, while boldly declar ing this to be a Christian nation and prepared to fight anyone who would dispute it, have nothing whatever to do with the institutions which are alone responsible for what Christian ity we possess. This is not to say that a resolution from Congress would do very much toward bringing our
