Surrounded by his stalwart and well-tried warriors, a heathen king lay dying. His breath came very heavily, and his strength was ebbing fast. Looking up at a faithful and lifelong servant, he said, "Tell the deed I come!” Instantly the man stabbed himself to the heart, that he might go before his king to what those heathen called "the kingdom of the dead,” and carry news of the com ing of his royal master.

For the Children J esus H elps P eople M atthew 9:35;' L uke 4:16-21

OBJECTS: Three capital “I’s,” a piece of paper 16 inches in diameter, cut and lined to represent the world, and 6 paper hearts about 1% inches across. (The “ i’s” should be 14 inches high, the stems 1 inch wide, and the top and bottom bars 4 inches wide and 1 inch high. Color the back of one red. Crease this one 21/2 inches from the top, permitting the top to fold forward when desired. Make an other crease 5 inches from the bottom. When the top is' folded down and the bottom up, the bars will come to gether and make a red cross. Color one side of the hearts black. Make slits in the world near the edges and slip the hearts into them, with the black side showing. Thumbtack the three “I’s” near the top of the black board, with the one having the red back in the middle. Tack the world a few inches below.) LESSON: These. “I’s” on the board remind us of the Trinity. God knew that there were sinners in the world needing salvation, and He sent-. His Son, the second person of the Trinity, to save them. (Remove the middle “I” and thumbtack it in the center of the world.) Christ, as the sinless Son of God, lived among men for more than thirty years. ' One day He announced that He was going to die. We read, “And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief pfiests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again” (Mk. 8:31). Peter did not like to hear this, and we are told, “And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him” (Mk. 8:32).' He did not realize that this was the only way in which salvation could come to his soul. We will fold this “I” to show you what happened. (Make it into a cross and again tack to the world.) Since Christ died on the cross, all sinners- are invited to come to Him for salva tion. We will take some of the black hearts and place them on the cross. They are changed, and are now clean and white. (With the white side showing, push the hearts behind the cross.) We can now understand bet ter why Christ came to die.

MEMORY VERSE: “Jesus of Nazareth ...w en t about doing good” (Acts 10: 38). AIM: To show that Jesus’ greatest kindness to us was in providing sal vation from our sins. APPROACH: The Bible says that when Jesus was here on earth He went about all the cities and villages, teaching. .. and p r e a c h i n g . . . and healing” (Matt 9:35). How busy He must have been! LESSON STORY: Once He was in the city of Nazareth, where He had lived as a boy. He was a man now, but many people remembered Him. Per haps they whispered to each other as they saw Him pass, “See, there is Jes.us! He is'"going to God’s house, just as He always has, for this is God’s day.” It is a good thing when our friends know we have the habit of going to church. The Lord Jesus went inside God’s house, or the synagogue, as it was called, and the minister asked Him to, read the Bible lesson for that day. Jesus did not need to: be coaxed to do this; He loved God's Word and He was glad to help. The verses He read had been written by God through His prophet Isaiah many years earlier, even before the Lord Jesus was born. They said that some day the heavenly Father would send Someone to “preach the. gospel to the poor,” to comfort sad people, to give sight to the blind, and to show everyone how to be free and happy in the Lord (vs. 18, 19). What a wonderful p e r s o n that would be! Jesus was the One whom God had sent. The Lord Jesus closed the Book and quietly sat down. “This day,” He said, “is this Scripture fulfilled in your ears” (v. 21). He could have added, “I am the loving Saviour whom the heavenly Father promised.” This was such an unusu.al message that the people were surprised when they heard It. But every one who be lieved it, and who received the Lord Jesus as his Saviour and Friend, was made glad.
