William Shaw, of Maybole, re counts: “When a lad I tried to manu facture some powder, and I had a drawer filled with the composition when it was found out. My grand father ordered that I put it in the gar den, which I did in a long train. I put a match to it, and it went off, but not rapidly. I was informed after wards that it lacked one element. It should have been immersed in a cer tain fluid and dried in the sunlight. I have often thought since, that our Christian testimony has sometimes an element wanting. An address is delivered in perfect order, firstly, secondly, and thirdly, but there is an element wanting. Perhaps we require to take that address, that hymn, or that ministry and immerse it in the love of Christ, and then a few words will, go a long way” (Acts 1:8; 1 Cor. 13:3).—1000 Tales Worth Telling. For the Children F riends are F aithful A cts 5:14, 16-18, 26-29 MEMORY VERSE: "We ought to obey God” ,(Acts 5:29). AIM: To show that the Lord Jesus gives to His followers everything they need. APPROACH: When the Lord Jesus went back to His Father in heaven, His friends the apostles did not sit down and feel lonesome. They began to tell others about Him—and when they did, they were happy! Sometimes great crowds listened. Jesus’ friends told the people how to be saved (v. 14), and if any were sick or in trouble, they helped them (v. 16). Even when things were not pleasant, the friends of Jesus kept right on loving Him and speaking about Him. LESSON STORY: Once they met some men who were cross and mean. These angry men hated the apostles’ mes sage. They were so jealous (R. V.) that they "laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the common prison” (v. 18). The friends of Jesus had not done anything at all that needed punishment. When thiis trouble came, it was really a good thing (Rom. 8:28). If there had been no trouble, the friends of Jesus could not have known how beautifully He would take care of them. When they were in prison, “the angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them forth, and said, Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life” (vs. 19, 20). Think of being led by an angel! When the friends of Jesus stood be

fore the officers (v. 26), and were ordered to keep still about their love for Jesus, another wonderful thing happened. At that very minute the Lord made His followers strong and brave, so they were not afraid of any body, and they said, "We ought to obey God rather than men” (v. 29). We may be His friends, too, if we love and trust Him as our Saviour, and He will make us glad. Object Lesson F lint —F lashlight — F lame OBJECTS: A piece of flint, a flash light, a candle,'and a hammer. LESSON: When the Lord Jesus was on earth, He told His disciples that they were the light of the world. He warned them against hiding their light under a bushel. This flint, flashlight, and candle represent' three kinds of Christians. They all have light in them, but each gives light in a different way and from a different cause. The flint is cold and hard. I have seen people whose lives did not re veal that they were Christians, until some great hammer struck them. It may have been the hammer of death striking some loved one. Being a “Flint Christian” is not what Christ meant when He said, “Let your light . . . shine before men” (Matt. 5:16). The flashlight is very convenient, but the “Flashlight Christian” is not the best kind. The ordinary flash light gives light when it is pressed, but when the pressure is removed, it is as dark and cold as the piece of flint. Many Christians are like the flashlight. They have to be cornered and put under pressure before they will confess Christ as their Saviour. Christians of this kind will not do very much to cause men to glorify God by their good works. The “Candle Christian” is the one who pleases Christ most. As the can dle shines, it gives of itself. This is the,way Christ wants us to shine for Him, as b r i g h t l y on the school grounds as we do in church. This lighted candle reminds me of the Christians in the early church at Jerusalem. Of them it was said, “And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesús Christ” (Acts 5:42).
