Greek Word Treasures For the student untaught in Greek. By Bernard Ramin, A.B., B.D. John 1:1, 2 V. 1 . “ In the beginning ’’ is the same phrase as used in the Greek transla tion of the Hebrew Bible known as the Septuagint and usually indicated by the symbol, LXX. Here the expression means that time when God created for the first time. It antedates Genesis 1:1 for obviously a spir.it creation preceded the material creation. “Was.” This is in the imperfect tense, denoting continuous action or being. Christ did not become God. He did not cease to be God. The Impact of the imperfect tense then is this: “He always was and constantly con tinues to be the Word.” “The Word.” Literally, the word is “the spoken thing.” It is the noun form of the verb, “to speak.” But it has acquired a multitude of mean ings. It may be expressed by “the divine Reason,” or “the divine Ex pression,” or "the divine Communica tion.” Philo, a Jewish philosopher, Stated that “the Word” was God’s first and greatest creation by whom He created all things. John declares that the person who created all things truly is the W o r d ” ; that He is not a creature, but the Creator, God the Son. “Was with God.” Once again the “was” is an imperfect denoting a state of constant existence with no time element involved. “With God” is literally “toward God,” or “face to face with God,” expressing a relationship of mutual love and fellowship and indicating as well a distinction of Persons. A m an cannot be face to face with himself, neither can the Uni tarian God of the Jews. Such a state ment could only apply to a Trinity. “And the Word was God.” First, since the Greeks did not use red ink, and wrote in capitals to begin with, they had no way of emphasizing things except by writing in unusually large letters (Galatians 6:11—-“how large a letter. . . ” or by reversing the word order. The word order is here reversed showing that the ex pression is emphatic. In English we ■ would write, AND THE WORD WAS GOD! There is to be no question of the essential Deity of the Word. Once again the word “was” is an imperfect thus d e n o t i n g continuous action. Christ was never MADE God, never BECAME God, He never CEASED TO BE God. He always was, continues to be, and shall be so in the future, GOD! V. 2. “The same” is a relative pro noun referring back to the Word. Translate, “This one.” “Was,” once again the imperfect denoting continuous existence. (T o Be Continued Next Month)
All Cutouts In Color! The Famous MANUAL OF VISUAL TEACHING for the Flanne lboard
The story is told of a visitor in a large, wealthy New York City church. When the time came to take the offering, he reached into his wallet and se lected a five-doliar bill, and waited for the usher. He ob served that the man taking the offering in his aisle was none other than a certain multi-mil lionaire of national reputation. Wishing to make a good im pression, he exchanged the five- dollar bill for a one-hundred dollar bill, and placed it on the plate. If, instead of the deacon in your c hu r c h , the one who passed up and down the aisles receiving the offering was the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and the hand that passed the offer ing basket to you was scarred with a nail print, would it make any difference in the size of the offering you contributed?
