SHEET METAL GAUGE SIZES 1453 or exposed to conditions for which it was not designed can be difficult to remove, leave residual adhesive, or be a factor in corrosion. If an improper film type is selected or if film is left in place too long, the film supplier should be contacted to identify an appropriate water-based cleaner or solvent for removal of residual adhesive, based on the type of adhesive. If a solvent is needed, rubbing alcohol or citric cleaners often are tried before resorting to more aggressive solutions. Sheet Metal Gauge Sizes Gauge sizes are numbers that indicate the thickness of a piece of sheet metal. The larger the gauge number, the thinner the sheet metal specification. Gauge differs between fer - rous (iron-based) metals and nonferrous metals, such as aluminum or copper. Sheet metal thickness conversion for various metals is shown in Table 20. Table 20.
