A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 11

On Monday and Tuesday this week we held open mornings for new prospective students to have a school tour and see the students in action around the school. Our year 11 prefects assisted in supporting the younger pupils, proudly showing the parents and students around the school site, while our Head Girl and Deputy Head Girls also delivered fantastic speeches about their experiences as Waldegrave students. All week we had the Scholastic Book Fair running with a wealth of new and interesting books to choose from, lots of students got involved with this over break and lunchtimes. This morning we held our annual Macmillan fundraising coffee morning where students brought in a variety of beautiful and colourful house themed cakes. Staff and students had a wonderful time looking, buying and consuming them all for a fantastic cause. A big well done to all of our prefects who have been busily working away on their prefect duties, all around the school new display boards and exciting projects have been popping up. Each prefect has a tracker card which is signed off by their allocated subject teacher when they attend their weekly duty. Prefects who have attended all their sessions this term will receive a bronze certificate and be entered into the prize draw at the end of the term to win amazon vouchers.

Just a reminder to sign up to the Sixth Form open evening Thursday 24th October.

Additionally next week on Thursday we are running an exam skills and revision workshop for parents run by Michele Miller, former teacher and coaching expert. The session runs from 5pm and you can find more informa- tion in the letter sent home.

On Friday 18 October the school will be marking Wear Red against Racism day as part of Black History month. We will be running assemblies all that week to celebrate Black History.

MRS ROOK, HEAD OF YEAR 11

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ - Margaret Atwood This book follows the Handmaid of a wealthy family as she struggles to fight for her rights in a dystopian society where women are used as breeding machines. While those in charge use threats to suppress the desires of the Handmaids, nothing can stop the desire she has to reunite with her daughter who was cruelly taken away as the repressive state was gaining power. Atwood combines fictional aspects with real world issues such as oppression of women and power divide to create a story that will make you simultaneously devastated and filled with motivation to ensure that we con- tinue to fight for what all women everywhere deserve the right to choose.
