A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 10
It has been quite a literary week this week at Waldegrave school. On Wednesday, Year 10 students had an assembly celebrating National Poetry day. This involved looking at modern day inspirational poets, from Benjamin Zephaniah to Michael Rosen and Kae Tempest. We watched poetry performances and students reflected on their own experience of performing poems from last year in the poetry by heart competition. At Waldegrave school we are always wanting to encourage students to read for pleasure. Outside of classrooms and offices, teachers have been putting up new reading posters of their own favourite books. Students are encouraged to take a look! I now have one outside of my own Head of Year office. This week we have also had the Scholastic Book Fair, where the purchases help our school library earn free books. Students have been encouraged to take a look at the books on offer and explore different genres as part of their English classes.
Well done to 10SPI who currently have 228 epraise points. In second place is 10PGO with 222.
Our MacMillan Coffee Morning took place this Friday. We were impressed by the array of cakes brought in and thank all our pupils who have supported this incredible cause - we all had a good time eating our treats. On Thursday 10 October, Year 10 will participate in Drop Down Day, where students will be working on building their confidence in public speaking. We have some external providers coming into the school to deliver this, and it should be a really enjoyable day where students get to speak about something they are passionate about.
On Friday 18 October the school will be marking Wear Red against Racism day as part of Black History month. We will be running assemblies all that week to celebrate Black History.
MRS PORTEOUS, HEAD OF YEAR 10
BOOK OF THE MONTH
‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ - Margaret Atwood This book follows the Handmaid of a wealthy family as she struggles to fight for her rights in a dystopian society where women are used as breeding machines. While those in charge use threats to suppress the desires of the Handmaids, nothing can stop the desire she has to reunite with her daughter who was cruelly taken away as the repressive state was gaining power. Atwood combines fictional aspects with real world issues such as oppression of women and power divide to create a story that will make you simultaneously devastated and filled with motivation to ensure that we continue to fight for what all women everywhere deserve the right to choose.
