This week it has been wonderful to welcome prospective students and their families into school for our Open Mornings. I was delighted with the wonderful Year 8 tour guides who have shown our visitors around. Parents made a point of telling me how friendly and helpful they were. As I told our

visitors, we are proud of our school and students everyday and despite torrential rain and broken bells, the mornings were a great success. On Tuesday afternoon our A level Mathematicians took part in the UK Senior Maths Challenge, enjoying the opportunity to apply their mathematical knowledge and skills to solve a variety of problems. Maths is our most popular A level subject so it was busy in the Hall! Today we have ended the week with a Waldegrave favourite, our Macmillan coffee morning, which we postponed due to Open Mornings last week. The Hall became a carnival of cake as our Houses competed to raise the most money for charity. It was lovely to see students involved all the way from Year 7 to Year 13. We will update you with the total raised next week. Tonight the Friends of Waldegrave are hosting our Year 7 Bingo Evening and I am looking forward to seeing many of our families there. This week we have begun our activities marking Black History month with fantastic assemblies delivered by a number of our students. On Friday 18 October the school will be marking Wear Red against Racism day as part of Black History month. Further details will be shared with students.

Next week is World Mental Mental Health Day and The Art of Brilliance has released a new blog about how to deal with feeling overwhelmed. The impact of rolling news cycles, conveying endless images of distress, crime and escalating conflict compounded by scrolling through social media, can result in us feeling overwhelmed and hopeless. The Art of Brilliance suggests three top tips for dealing with overwhelm; manage your inputs, control the controllables and focus on one thing at a time. You can read the full blog here and encourage your children to stay positive by participating in Optimistic October. The Anna Freud Centre has some good tips which I would recommend for talking to secondary school age children about mental health and Unicef also has helpful guidance for parents, If you would like to have a conversation with your child/ren about conflict and war.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 13
Another busy week for Year 13 as early entry students put the finishing touches to their UCAS applications. A reminder to all students to ensure they have registered with UCAS and have their own unique username. They should have already received feedback on the first personal statement draft and be getting further feedback from subject specialist teachers. As always if a student is unsure of the process or worried in any way they should seek out help from the Year 13 team. On Tuesday afternoon, a number of both Year 12 and Year 13 A Level Maths and Further Maths students took part in the Senior Maths Challenge. It was a 90-minute event, at which students needed to answer 25 multi- ple-choice questions. The competition aimed to stimulate both beginners and experienced problem-solvers, with problems designed to make students think. The attendees were all delighted they took part. We were really pleased to see Year 13 students contribute to the Macmillan Bake Sale this week. Some very im- pressive nut-free cakes were baked and we are looking forward to finding out how much money was raised for this worthy cause. This coming Monday, Year 13 students are invited to attend a Police Apprenticeship Talk about the degree ap- prenticeship route into policing. This will take place in the study base at 3.30pm. It is a great opportunity to hear about this apprenticeship pathway and will also be interesting to students wishing to pursue criminology and forensic psychology.

‘The old man and the sea’- Ernest Hemingway
A beautiful tale of a fisherman’s extremely challenging journey through the gulf stream, with a burning desire to catch what he has never been able to previously. The emotive effects of isolation and the physical toll chasing your dreams can take become more and more prevalent throughout. Hemingway masterfully combines carefully crafted and peaceful imagery of the sea with immense mental torment, as well as taking readers on a journey regarding the emptiness we may feel once our goals have been achieved, and perhaps don’t bring the fulfilment we dreamt of, we always wish for more.

WORD OF THE WEEK
Waldegrave School has introduced Word of the Week focus time on Friday afternoons. This activity works alongside our school focus on literacy and oracy.
We have chosen words that are applicable in day to day life, across a variety of subjects, applicable to future careers, and something that can form the basis of group discussions within form groups and by sharing this at home with this new section of the weekly bulletin we hope to inspire conversations at home too!
