A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 9

This week Year 9 participated in the Macmillan Coffee Morning and we were so impressed by the incredible bak- ing talent. It was a lovely event to share, eat and donate to a worthy cause.

Many clubs are underway and we encourage our Year 9s to get involved in as many as possible. Please see the Extra-curricular club list attached on their Form Google Classrooms.

The Epraise competition is definitely ‘hotting up’ this week and we have three forms in the running for 1st place.

1. 9SSR- 391 2. 9EMU- 360 3. 9PWA -340

A huge congratulations to the following students who are top in Year 9 for Epraise: Anastasiia M, Ella R-J and Esme D-S.

Congratulations also to Jessica S in 9SSA who received a Distinction in her Grade 6 MTB violin exam.

This week we have also had the Scholastic Book Fair, where the purchases help our school library earn free books. Students have been encouraged to take a look at the books on offer and explore different genres as part of their English classes. Next week we have our fabulous Drop Down Day in which all students will be off timetable to allow them to take part in enrichment activities. Year 9 will be taking part in taster GCSE sessions as well as a speed networking event in which they will get to meet a range of figures in the world of work and be able to find out about their careers. We would appreciate it if you could spend some time this week speaking to your child/ren about GCSE choices and careers ahead of this upcoming event.

MRS MORTIMER, HEAD OF YEAR 9

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ - Margaret Atwood This book follows the Handmaid of a wealthy family as she struggles to fight for her rights in a dystopian society where women are used as breeding machines. While those in charge use threats to suppress the desires of the Handmaids, nothing can stop the desire she has to reunite with her daughter who was cruelly taken away as the repressive state was gaining power. Atwood combines fictional aspects with real world issues such as oppression of women and power divide to create a story that will make you simultaneously devastated and filled with motivation to ensure that we continue to fight for what all women everywhere deserve the right to choose.
