An NBA Star’s Greatest Assist Is Off the Court

His father pulled up near a bridge where a homeless family was sleeping in a little tent. More than an hour passed in silence. Then, at around 6:30 a.m., a man emerged from the tent, followed by his wife and two children, and Shaq’s father said, “I’m tired of you rich, spoiled athletes not performing up to your level and saying you can’t handle the pressure. You don’t know what pressure is. You still get paid after a bad game.” Nodding toward the homeless man and his family, Shaq’s father added, “ That’s pressure, when you don’t know where your next meal is coming from.”
I’ve been spending way too much time lately on TikTok. The algorithm keeps feeding me new content that draws me in, and Shaq’s videos are among my favorites.
The former NBA champion has a massive following, and a lot of his content features examples of kindness. In recognition of Feb. 17 as Random Acts of Kindness Day, it’s worth recounting the story of how Shaq’s dad taught him the meaning of true generosity.
“Son, get out of the car,” his father said.
“What?” Shaq asked.
In one video, the four-time NBA champion describes how devastated he was early in his career after playing poorly in a game against the New York Knicks. When his father, a military veteran, called him after the game, Shaq’s excuse was that he “couldn’t handle the pressure” to perform. “My father said, ‘What? You couldn’t handle the pressure?’ And I tell him no … And now, he’s very upset.” SHAQ REPORTS HOME Shaq’s dad ordered him to fly home and arrive at his house by 0500 the next day. He caught a red-eye flight to Orlando and arrived at his parents’ house at the appointed hour. His father, a man of few words, ordered him to get in his car, and they drove in silence for a while. “When my dad didn’t speak, you didn’t speak,” Shaq said.
“Get out of the car!” Shaq complied. As his father drove away, he called out the car window, “Don’t call me until you fix their problems!” SHAQ CHANGES A LIFE He approached the man and listened to his story. The father had lost his job and his home and could barely afford to feed his family. “You need a place to stay,” Shaq said, so he called a buddy who owned apartment buildings and arranged to send him a check covering 10 months’ rent for a three-bedroom apartment for the family.
“Now, you need a ride,” Shaq said. His next call was to an auto dealer to purchase the family a car.

Next up: a job. “What do you like to do?” Shaq asked. The man said he used to work in landscaping. So, Shaq called a friend who owned a lawn service and got the man a job. In 10 minutes, he completely changed the trajectory of that father’s life. ... continued from Cover
The man came back to thank Shaq two years later, and “he was very, very successful,” Shaq says. He hired the man to mow his own lawn in Orlando.

Bennett, who has seen me leave big gratuities, announced as we were leaving, “I’m going to give her a tip.” He has this little wallet where he keeps his money. He reached inside, pulled out a $20, and walked up and handed it to her. Marah and I told the waitress, “Just so you know, that’s his money.” We could see by the look on her face that she was deeply touched: That $20 he gave her might as well have been $1 million! By the look on Bennett’s face, I’m guessing he was experiencing the rewards, too. I was so grateful to see my son giving all that he had earned to help another. For our family, as for Shaq, practicing kindness made that a great day.
