Action Plan to Reduce the Population’s Exposure to and Contamination from Lead in Drinking Water
Phase 1 (2019) :
• Strategy 1: Test all schools (pre-K through 12, public and private) and all licensed daycare centers (including daycare and group daycare homes) for lead in drinking water. • Strategy 2: Increase public awareness/education about the dangers of lead in drinking water, such as lead content in fixtures, efficacy of lead testing, and labeling of filters. • Strategy 3: Encourage an inventory of lead service lines and future management plans in each municipality.
Phase 2 (2020) :
• Strategy 1: Evaluate the EPA’s Lead and Copper Rule and any proposed changes. • Strategy 2: Consider amendments to the model policy to include testing of other facilities such as hospitals, veterans’ homes, and senior centers. • Strategy 3: Take steps to ensure that labs are providing useful reports to anyone who pays for their water to be tested (options include submitting including in comments to EPA on the Lead and Copper Rule or adding to model policy). • Strategy 4: Increase investment in full lead service line replacement. o Compile information on funding available from all sources to replace lead service lines, as well as the specific financing mechanisms used. o Develop model policy for financing full replacement. • Strategy 5: Monitor state and provincial efforts to implement model policy and make information available on the GLLC website.
