To Our Veterans This Holiday Season UNIQUE WAYS TO GIVE BACK As we approach the holiday season, Veterans Day is often overshadowed by other festivities, making it easy to forget our struggling veterans and their needs. Reports from Urban Development officials say we have more than 730 homeless veterans in Tennessee alone. Statistics like this hit close to home, as many of our patients are veterans. To help make a genuine difference for our veteran community this holiday, consider being a part of these local organizations. Operation Stand Down Tennessee This nonprofit focuses on helping our veterans by providing a variety of services, including employment and VA benefits assistance, networking, and housing. Through their Capital Campaign and “Heroes Breakfast” events, they raise funds for those programs. To get involved, go to their website Osdtn.org to learn more about how you can donate items from their wish list, volunteer for a Heroes Breakfast, or contribute in other ways. Alpha Omega Veterans Services, Inc. Alpha Omega Veterans Services Inc. is dedicated to helping veterans reintegrate into civilian life with transitional and permanent housing. Their urban farm and garden provide therapeutic exercise for veterans, especially those with PTSD, along with employment opportunities. To get involved, consider donating on a corporate level, sponsoring a veteran, donating supplies, or volunteering on the farm! For more information, go to AlphaOmegaVeterans.org. Community for Heroes Community for Heroes supplies short-term and long-term housing to those veterans adjusting to civilian life in the Cookeville area. In addition to housing, they also offer money and time management assistance. They always accept “By providing online business classes to veterans who have the entrepreneurial spirit, [Vet-Com] not only helps veterans realize their dreams but also helps them readjust to civilian life through working toward their goals.”

donations, and, if you’d like to make an even greater impact, host an event! Visit CommunityForHeroes.org to learn more. They’re always looking for unique ways to reach the community. Vet-Com: Veteran Entrepreneurial Training Command The sole mission of this organization is to provide opportunities in the marketplace for veterans to grow their own businesses. By providing online business classes to veterans who have the entrepreneurial spirit, their work not only helps veterans realize their dreams but also helps them readjust to civilian life through working toward their goals. To help them achieve their goals, sponsor a soldier’s education by visiting their website at Vet-Com.org. Smoky Mountain Service Dogs Smoky Mountain’s entire mission is to enhance the quality of life for wounded veterans by providing trained service dogs. This service is free to disabled veterans because, through the use of a service dog, they can become increasingly self-sufficient and more involved in the community. You can either donate or volunteer to help raise or house dogs for veterans. To learn more about this organization, go to SmokyMountainServiceDogs.org. Sometimes it can be a struggle to find the best way to make an impact for our local veterans. If you need to find something near you or want to find other ways to help, go to VA.gov for more information. —Brett Parish
