TRACK DESCRIPTION The major focus of faculty appointed to the Education Tenure Track is leadership in the teaching mission of the CoM. Teaching excellence is paramount and can be judged by a sustained record of individual teaching in courses and through student mentoring; however, successful progression through the Education Tenure Track (and what distinguishes this track from the non-tenure Educator track) requires activities beyond the classroom such as developing, leading and sustaining program accreditation, publication of scholarly works in journals, textbooks and/or the academic press, obtaining grants to support the scholarship of teaching and learning and/or externally funded training programs to continue to advance the education mission. Administrative activities to sustain specific educational programs are also a requirement of this track, such as establishing goals and objectives, leading program evaluation initiatives, tracking graduates, and leading/coordinating the efforts of Adjunct and Educator Track faculty. Finally, research in education and/or in the specific content area(s) of the department is required for success of the program and the candidate. Clinical faculty in this track will devote a considerable amount of effort in resident and student education. Examples of clinical faculty who may qualify for this track include residency and fellowship program directors, or student clerkship directors, provided that they are driving innovative change and developing and introducing novel and/or state of the art teaching, learning or evaluation methods in an existing program or developing a new program, rather than simply managing an existing program. Tenure is granted in recognition that the faculty member has fulfilled in a preeminent fashion the qualities of a scholar and has demonstrated excellence in teaching/mentoring, research and service. Tenure implies a long-term commitment by the department, college or university to the qualified individual and requires the continuing dedication of the tenured faculty member to his/her discipline, department, the college and theuniversity. Promotion to Associate Professor is usually not sought until a candidate has been in his/her current rank for 5 years, while promotion to Professor is usually not sought until after seven years as an Associate Professor. However, appointment or promotion with fewer years at rank will be considered for those candidates that meet the criteria for advancement.
