SITE MANAGER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME Ardmac’s Site Manager Development Programme is designed to offer opportunity to all our current Trade and Site Supervisors interested in taking the next step into a Site Manager role. The programme seeks to enhance the technical and managerial skills required to succeed as a professional Site Manager and is a structured approach to your professional development. In turn, this enables Ardmac to put in place an ongoing succession plan. We want to create long term linkages from our trade and on-site supervisors through to senior management positions.

WHO IS THE PROGRAMME AIMED AT? The programme is aimed at anybody currently operating at the following levels:

REQUIRED TRAITS OF THE SITE MANAGER The Site Manager Development Programme will give you all of the necessary technical skills required on site. There are additional traits necessary to the role that can only be gained through experience, and these will be developed through close consultation and coaching with your mentor. 01. SAFETY FIRST Through our Safety First programme we can eliminate injuries and enhance people’s lives through embedding positive attitudes and beliefs to safety, enabling them to think about safety positively and in a different way. 02. SITE OWNERSHIP Site Managers will need to take ownership of the site and the teams working on it. They must want the role and understand the responsibility that comes with that. All members of the Site Team will call upon the Site Manager when looking for direction. 03. SOFT SKILLS Soft skills are non-technical skills that describe how you work and interact with others. As a Site Manager, you will need to use a range of these soft skills on site while working with a wide range of personalities.

LINE MANAGER & MENTOR SUPPORT The Site Manager Development Programme involves a formal relationship between you and your mentor. Your mentor will be assigned to assist and support you for the duration of the programme. You will also have a close relationship with your Line Manager throughout the programme. 01. LINE MANAGER Your Line Manager plays a key role in the Site Manager Development Programme. The Line Manager and the Site Manager meet on a daily basis. These meetings need to be structured in order that they are beneficial to the Site Manager. 02. MENTOR You will be introduced to your mentor during the induction process. The purpose of this relationship is to provide you with professional and personal support so that your development in the programme is successful and rewarding.

THE PROGRAMME
ON SITE EXPERIENCE Working on site gives you the opportunity to develop your managerial, technical and personal skills. You will put into practice the theory presented at training workshops. Creating professional relationships with your peers, colleagues and subcontractors is also an important aspect of your career progression. Managers are encouraged to visit other sites, subject to Line Manager approval, to learn and understand other systems of construction. MONTHLY TRAINING/WORKSHOPS You will attend a number of workshops, both on and away from your designated site. These workshops target specific elements of your programme development. Self-managed online, task based learning and ongoing webinars will also be a part of your programme. SITE TEAM (QS, PLANNERS, DESIGN, SHEQ) All Site Managers work alongside a number of different functions, and it is important for you to understand their role. You will spend designated periods each week, working with your Site Team.

CIOB CHARTERSHIP As part of the Site Manager Development Programme participants will have the option to become a member through the CIOB and explore the different routes to Chartership. Achieving your Chartered membership from the CIOB is an important milestone for any Site Manager. It is an accolade associated with the very best of the Construction Management profession. Ardmac is a CIOB Accredited Company. This is a great reflection of the quality of Ardmac training and its impact on the Construction Industry.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED WITH ARDMAC? I joined Ardmac in September 2018 following completion of my BSc (Hons) in Construction Management. I spent the summer prior to joining in Boston and when I arrived home I applied to join Ardmac’s graduate programme. My first project appointment with Ardmac was on a pharmaceutical site in Cork where I covered my commercial and site management phase of the programme. HOW DID YOU GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY? My progression in Ardmac could be credited to hard work and dedication to the project, but equally as important are the teams I have been lucky to work with. The guidance I have received from my peers and managers and overall the friendship and comradery I found with Ardmac, that creates a comfortable work environment making it much easier to ask questions and seek advice whenever it was required. Since joining I have always had team members and senior managers who are available at any hour of the day to take a call for advice or simply just to run over the works of the day. I’ve never been afraid to try something new with Ardmac as even if I got it wrong there has been someone there to help steer me in the right direction. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE ARDMAC? The industries in which Ardmac work are

They make sure that projects are constructed within time, quality and cost limits. They need to keep track of all sub-contractors on site and make sure that all workers have relevant paperwork. Day to day, construction site managers would take on a wide range of responsibilities. Their core tasks include solving problems that occur on site.

The graduate programme on offer also gave me flexibility in being able to explore different departments within the company. This included commercial, quality & safety, planning and site management. This was attractive as coming straight from college I wanted to get a flavour of each before deciding on exactly what path I wanted to proceed with. WHAT IS THE CULTURE AT ARDMAC LIKE? I have always found the culture at Ardmac to be great. You can reach out to anyone in the company no matter what part of the world they are in and it is as if you have been working with them every day for the last ten years. Each team I have been part of works hard to do things the “Ardmac way”, whether that is with our approach to safety first, our quality standards or how we communicate and operate as a team. There is always a sense of we are in this together, there are no lone soldiers. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB? Every day is a brand-new day. New challenges come by the hour on a live project and working as part of a strong team to deal with the challenges to deliver a high-quality product for our clients definitely keeps the brain very active. Having the opportunity to be part of delivering critical projects for some of the world’s largest clients is a great sense of achievement. Getting recognised for the hard work and seeing progression within the company is also very rewarding when you have committed to a project for so long.

Our Site Manager Development Programme is a senior management priority and assists in preparing our Trade and Site Supervisors to take that first step in transitioning into the role of a Site Manager. This is a structured 6-month programme, which consists of a mix of external and internal (onsite) training. Each person will be supported with their development throughout the programme by their line manager and mentor.
