SMALL GESTURES, BIG IMPACT

It’s often said that no act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. On Feb. 17, we celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Day, which is dedicated to spreading love and positivity through unexpected acts of kindness. In a world filled with challenges and uncertainties, the beauty of brightening someone’s day with a selfless act is a powerful reminder of the goodness that exists within us all. There’s a special beauty and joy that comes from giving without expecting anything in return. When we extend kindness to others, whether it’s friends, family, or strangers, it makes their day brighter and fills our hearts with a profound sense of fulfillment. Research supports the idea that performing kind acts for others releases dopamine and oxytocin, the “feel- good” hormones, contributing to overall well-being. One of the beautiful aspects of random acts of kindness is the ability to carry them out anonymously. Whether it’s leaving an uplifting note for a colleague, paying for a stranger’s coffee, or quietly helping someone in need, the anonymity adds an element of surprise and delight to the recipient. The spontaneity of these acts creates a sense of magic in the moment, fostering a connection between people who may never know each other’s identities. I’ve begun incorporating random acts of kindness into family life, too. Children are more perceptive and compassionate than we give them credit for — at first, they were confused by the process, but now, they are always looking for a way to do good for others. Sometimes, when we go out for frozen yogurt, we purchase a gift card and ask the

cashier to cover the next handful of people’s orders when they come in. Or, when we go out to eat, we occasionally pay for a random family’s meal. The random thought and act is heartwarming and helps lift the spirits of others and brings us happiness, too. It’s important to note that random acts of kindness are not limited to grand gestures; even the smallest actions can make a significant impact. Holding the door open for someone, offering a genuine compliment, or expressing gratitude to those who often go unnoticed are simple yet meaningful ways to spread positivity. The creativity lies in finding opportunities to make someone’s day a little brighter. The world can sometimes feel challenging, and small gestures for others go a long way. By doing good for others, we can all join in a collective effort to infuse positivity into our communities. Small acts, like picking up litter in a local park or offering a helping hand to someone in need, create a positive energy that has a ripple effect, inspiring others to follow suit. The significance of Random Acts of Kindness Day extends beyond a single day on the calendar. It serves as a reminder that kindness is a universal language transcending

boundaries and differences. By consistently incorporating acts of kindness into our lives, we contribute to creating a kinder and more compassionate world, one gesture at a time.

Bending, planting, and tending to vegetables are excellent low-impact exercises that improve flexibility and strength. Plus, it doesn’t feel like you’re exercising because the activity is goal-focused. Healthy Eating: Harvesting your own vegetables ensures a supply of fresh, organic produce. This home-grown food is free from harmful pesticides and richer in nutrients, contributing to a healthier diet. If you have extras, you can share your harvest with others, helping to improve their diets, too! Mental Health: Gardening is therapeutic. It reduces stress and promotes a sense of accomplishment. It’s also a source of new learning and curiosity. You may need to do some research to learn about the best zones for various plants and techniques to keep them healthy. protect the soil and local wildlife. Home-grown vegetables mean fewer trips to the store and less packaging waste, contributing to a smaller carbon footprint. So, by gardening, you’re participating in an eco-friendly practice. Social Connection: Growing Community Ties Gardening offers opportunities to connect with fellow gardeners, share tips, and exchange produce, fostering a sense of community. Before Alexis joined our Shoup Legal family, she was working at a personal injury firm. “During that time, my father unfortunately passed away,” she noted. “He didn’t have anything

planned as far as estate planning goes, and it was at this time that I noticed the knowledge gap within cultural communities. I’m of Latin descent, and in our culture, estate planning isn’t something commonly talked about. I viewed this as an opportunity and found my calling.” Alexis is currently in law school part time and commutes three days a week to Ontario. “While it’s certainly a huge commitment, I’ve learned a lot about prioritizing, time management, and taking advantage of any free time I have. I feel that I constantly receive many signs, both personally and professionally, that assure me that at Shoup, I’m where I’m supposed to be.” Outside of work, Alexis enjoys dancing, cooking, and spending time outdoors. Alexis, we are thrilled you chose Shoup Legal to call home and look forward to continuing to make a difference in the lives of our clients together!

Puff Pastry Berry Hearts Inspired by Weelicious.com

Estate Planning Lessons From US Presidents Presidents who have served the U.S. have taken on a responsibility that exceeds what most of us can even imagine. The decisions they make affect millions of people for better and worse. As these leaders manage their citizens’ complicated needs, you might think they would have no problem managing their personal affairs, but that’s not always the case. Feb. 19 is Presidents Day, which gives us a great opportunity to reflect upon the successes and failures of some of our past presidents’ estate plans. GO BEYOND THE OVAL OFFICE

Valentine’s Day means heart-shaped everything, even desserts! Bake these puff pastry berry hearts for Valentine’s Day or any other day. Ingredients • 1 package frozen puff pastry, defrosted • 1 cup heavy cream • 1 tsp powdered sugar • 1/2 cup fresh raspberries (or berries of your choice)

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 400 F. Unfold the puff pastry and use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut into heart shapes. 2. On a baking sheet, place puff pastry hearts and bake for 10–12 minutes or until golden brown. 3. In a standing mixer, whip the cream on medium-high speed for 2–3 minutes. Add the powdered sugar and beat on high for 30 more seconds or until thick and fluffy. 4. Remove hearts from the oven and allow to cool completely. Slice each heart in half between pastry layers to create 2 hearts. Top the bottom half with whipped cream and berries, and place the other half on top to form a sandwich.

Abraham Lincoln Lincoln’s life ended suddenly and unexpectedly, so it’s probably not surprising that he did not have an estate plan in place when he passed away. A Supreme Court justice had to become

involved to determine how Lincoln’s estate should be divided between his wife and living sons. There’s no telling if the outcome aligned with what Lincoln wished for his family. You never know when you’re going to pass away, so it’s essential that you create and maintain an estate plan throughout your life.

George Washington It might come as a surprise to learn that Washington was the patriarch of a blended family. He had stepsons and grandchildren that he cared about deeply. To ensure that his heirs received everything they would need to live a happy and fruitful life, Washington was meticulous with his will. Like many of us, Washington wanted what was best for his family after he was gone. Through deliberate planning, we can ensure our legacy lives on through our children, grandchildren, and beyond.

Thomas Jefferson Debt is something that affects nearly every American, even our presidents. Our third president, Thomas Jefferson, knew the pains of debt all too well. Jefferson struggled with finances and debt throughout his life. There was little cash available to settle his debts after his death, so the family had to sell his land instead, leaving very little for his heirs. If Jefferson

would have had a life insurance policy in place, he could have settled his debts with his policy rather than paying with property and cash meant for his family.

Studying our past presidents is a great way to discover history and learn some valuable life lessons. If you want to avoid some of the estate planning mistakes that our forefathers made, give us a call today!
