Theories of Crime Causation
Theories of Crime Causation is a major course in the Bachelor of Science in Criminology program. This textbook captures the theoretical perspective of crime causation committed by individuals and institutions. It offers a wide array of theories from all dimensions and aspects of the person, society, and institutions, such as biological, psychological, social, biopsychosocial, environmental, economic, and political. The subject of female offenders is also covered in this textbook. Overall, this material aims to equip students with knowledge that will strengthen their skills in the study of criminology, particularly in the understanding and application of theories of crime causation.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
GLENDA C. PANUGALING, PHD
He has been a professor at the Criminology Department of PHINMA Cagayan de Oro College (COC) since 2009. In the same year, she placed eighth in the Criminologist Licensure Examination. She received her BS in Criminology and MS in Criminology degrees from PHINMA COC, and then her PhD degree from the Philippine College of Criminology. Four years into teaching, she was appointed as the Program Head of Law Enforcement Administration and she continues to assume the post up to the present. Ms. Panugaling has attended various school-based seminars and workshops and outcomes- based education training sessions. She also participated in national-level training programs, including the Crash Course on the Basic Principles of Forensic Sciences and the Short Course on Crisis Management, Investigation, and Forensic Science, held at PNPTS Camp Crame, Quezon City. In 2015, she underwent a 4-month exposure at the NBI QD and Polygraphy Laboratory Division at the NBI National Headquarters in Manila. Moreover, Ms. Panugaling joined educational tours at Hong Kong University, the National University and the Health Sciences Authority in Singapore, and the International Law Enforcement Academy in Thailand. In 2018 and 2019, she presented her master’s thesis and dissertation during the 10th and 11th Asian Criminological Society Conferences held in Malaysia and Cebu, respectively. Ms. Panugaling has written school-based modules for senior high school students and college freshmen. She is also a regular review lecturer for the country’s Criminologist Licensure Examination, Ms. Panugaling is also a member of the Asian Criminological Society.
GERRY J. CAÑO, PHD
He is a criminologist by profession, with strong linkages among criminologists here and abroad. He is a member of the American Society of Criminology, the Asian Criminological Society, and is the convenor of the 11th Asian Criminology Society Conference. He is also a member of the International Society of Criminology, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Technical Panel for Criminal Justice Education, and the Professional Regulation Commission’s Continuing Professional Development Council of Criminology. Dr. Caño is the Dean of the College of Criminology, PHINMA Cagayan de Oro College (COC). Through his vision and leadership in action, PHINMA COC has become a consistent producer of top-notch graduates who are often on the roster of successful board examinees. Moreover, COC is becoming more and more known for its remarkable board-passing performance under the continued guidance of Dean Caño. Under his management, COC has been bestowed the Center of Excellence in Criminology Award by CHED. He is instrumental in shaping the direction of the criminology education and profession in the country, consequently resulting in the passage of RA 11131, also known as The Philippine Criminology Profession Act of 2018.
