A Course Module for Science, Technology, and Society A Course Module for Science, Technology, and Society was conceptualized to develop a deep appreciation and critical understanding of the role of science and technology in the development of people and society. It deals with the interactions between science and technology in social, cultural, political, and economic contexts. This book is designed to guide undergraduate students to develop critical thinking and creativity as they utilize science in understanding various human conditions and social issues; explore the role of science and technology in nation-building; analyze scientific ideas, theories, innovations, research, and practices; and discover technological advancements brought by science to the society. In this book, students are expected to broaden their theoretical and practical understanding of Science, Technology, and Society (STS) as a course and as a field of study. Each lesson contains essential information, activities, and guide questions that will aid students in learning STS. This book also leads students to acknowledge that science and society are inseparable. The development of scientific ideas draws inspiration from the physical and natural world, and society is always a recipient of the positive benefits of science and technology. This book was written with an intense passion and a deep sense of mission to contribute to the intellectual development of Filipino college students.
ABOUT THE AUTHORS
EDEN JOY PASTOR ALATA
She is a graduate of Master of Science in Biology at the De La Salle University-Manila and Bachelor of Science in Biology at the University of the East- Manila. She is currently a full-time professor at the Biological Sciences Department of Centro Escolar University-Manila. She also co-authored other Rex Book Store, Inc. textbooks, including Science, Technology, and Society for GEC and Teaching Strategies for Elementary Science (Physics and Earth Science).
MARK JOSEPH TUMADA CALANO
He is an Associate Professor and the Graduate Program Coordinator of the Department of Philosophy at the Ateneo de Manila University. He is a graduate of Bachelor of Philosophy (cum laude), MA in Philosophy (cum laude), MA in Religious Studies (magna cum laude), Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Linguistics (magna cum laude) at Saint Louis University, and a Doctor of Philosophy at the Ateneo de Manila University. He did his postdoctoral fellowships at the Scientia Forum in Tubingen, at the Dynamics of Religion in Southeast Asia (DORISEA) in Berlin and Gottingen, Germany, and at the Benedict XVI Center in Vienna, Austria. Dr. Calano served as president of the Philosophical Association of the Philippines, Inc. and is an international board member of the Korean Society for Literature and Religion.
GREG TABIOS PAWILEN
He finished his Master of Arts in Education and Doctor of Philosophy in Education major in Curriculum Studies at the University of the Philippines- Diliman. He also completed his Master of Education in Curriculum Development and did a postdoctoral study on Gifted Education in Science at the Ehime University in Japan. As a scholar, he has published numerous research papers in national and international peer-reviewed journals. He finished his Ph.D. with an Academic Excellence Award. He also received the prestigious Pi Gamma Mu Award for Academic Excellence in Social Sciences. Currently, he is a professor of Curriculum Development and Evaluation and Human Development Studies at UP-Los Baños.
