Foundations of Special and Inclusive Education is a book that tackles the importance of society’s openness to diversity and inclusion. It begins with a definition and clarification of diversity. Then, it discusses the historical, socio-cultural, and philosophical foundations of inclusion before proceeding to expound on how inclusive schools can be created, sustained, and supported. Moreover, typical and atypical development among children, as well as the learning characteristics of students with special education needs, are also covered significantly in the book. ABOUT THE AUTHORS

CRISTINA NIEVES ALIGADA-HALAL

She has been teaching children with developmental needs and learning difficulties for the last 15 years. She earned her Master’s in Educational Foundations major in Educational Psychology from the University of the Philippines (UP). She is working on her dissertation for the completion of her PhD program in special education, also at UP. She is a SPED practitioner, a trained job coach for PWDs, and a part-time faculty member at Miriam College and UP. At Miriam College, she chairs the Special Needs and Inclusive Education program at the graduate level. She also does consultation work in Special Education.

MARIE ROSE A. YUZON

She is the chairperson and a faculty member of the Department of Early Childhood at the College of Education, Miriam College in Quezon City. She is a former school administrator and teacher at the Miriam College Child Study Center. She gives talks on media literacy, gentle discipline, project-based learning, design thinking for young children, assessment for early childhood education, and other topics in early childhood education. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Behavioral Science from Maryknoll College and her Master’s in Basic Education from the Ateneo de Manila University. She is pursuing her Master’s in Designing Education from Miriam College and Goldsmiths, University of London.

CRISTINA ROWENA S. PADILLA

She earned her undergraduate degree in elementary education major in special education from the University of the Philippines (UP)-Diliman and her Master’s in Psychology major in Child and Family Development from Ateneo de Manila University. She is taking up doctorate studies in reading education at UP-Diliman. As a part-time faculty member at Miriam College, she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in Child Development and Special Education. As a reading specialist, she has extensive experience in developing literacy programs, teacher training, reading assessment, diagnosis, and instruction for learners with learning and reading disabilities.

CLARISSA CARMELITA MARIANO-LIGON, PHD

She is an administrator and faculty member at Miriam College. Prior to this, she was an inclusive teacher and a visiting international faculty member in the USA. She gives talks on education and family and also writes for a local magazine. Dr. Ligon obtained her Bachelor of Science in Child Development and Education (cum laude) from Miriam College and her Master’s in Special Education with high distinction from De La Salle University. In 2013, she received the President’s Award for Teaching Excellence from Miriam College and the Teacher of the Year Award from Step-Up International. Recently, she earned her doctorate degree in philosophy in family studies from Miriam College.
