The Adult and Sunday School

by Henry Jacobsen

T he minister was offering the pastoral prayer at the morning church service. He prayed for the sick and the infirm, for the mis sionaries and for unsaved folk in the community. Then he got around to the Sunday school. “ . . . and bless our Sunday school, dear Lord,” he asked earnestly, “ and its work for our boys and girls.” Of course Sunday school is for boys and girls, but why limit it to them? The idea that Sunday school is a strictly juvenile project is old-fashioned! There is growing awareness today that Sunday school also has a vital ministry for young people and adults. What is more, we realize today that we can do an effective job with children only if we can get Mother and Dad into adult Bible classes. Evangelical Sunday schools have always had adult Bible classes, but many have been only convenient places where parents might kill time while their small fry were in Sunday school. Alert Christian edu cation workers today, however, real ize that an adult department can exert a tremendous influence on entire fam ilies, from oldest to j youngest. The Lord Jesus commissioned His j apostles to feed the sheep as well | as the lambs (John 21:15-17). Men ! and women were as important to the Saviour as boys and girls—He j spent the greater part of His time ; working with adults. Unless we i feed the sheep, we cannot adequate ly feed the lambs.

Most of our Sunday school losses occur in the intermediate (junior high) and senior departments, and practically all of those who leave Sunday school during their teens are from families where neither parent attends. If parents are en thusiastic members of an adult Bi ble class, young people in a family are usually in Sunday school, being taught the Word of God at the very age when they need it most. There is no logical or scriptural reason why Sunday schools should not provide as conscientiously for men and women as they prepare themselves to serve boys and girls. The spiritual needs of adults are as large as those of children and young people. Mature men and women have not grown beyond needing in struction in the truths of Scripture. Facing economic, social and moral problems that are often overwhelm ing, painfully aware of their own shortcomings and failures, they des perately need the saving, sanctify ing and enabling message of the gospel. Sunday school is a must for entire families. According to census statistics, al most two-thirds of our population is 18 years of age or over. It fol lows that if a Sunday school is reaching its share of adults, the
