Choir Praises James W. Brewer, compiler Choir Praises is a collection of 13 well-known hymns and gospel songs arranged for use by church choirs or smaller ensembles. Choral material of this type is especially suited for use in services and meetings of an informal nature; it should not, how ever, become the norm for a morning worship service. Most of the selections are quite well arranged, and are within the performing ability of most any choral group. Especially effective are the following se le c tion s : “ Open My Eyes” ; “ Lead Me to Calvary” ; “ Cru sader’s Hymn” ; and “ O Master Let Me Walk With Thee.” It seems most unfortunate that “ Just A Closer Walk With Thee” had to be included in this collection. No amount of arrang ing, in the opinion of this reviewer, can make this piece of pseudo religious jazz a worthy praise to Christ. Another weakness of several of the arrangements is an excessive use of lush chromatic chords, which often suggest a type of “musical cliche,” and tend to destroy rather than enhance the meaning of the hymn.
