SPACE PLANNING
CREAT ING A SPACE PL AN A space plan is a view of the room drawn to scale. Creating a space plan by hand on grid paper or using the 3D tool will help you visualize the space and determine the best furniture arrangement for your client. Accurate measuring is essential to creating a space plan; even the slightest of errors can make the space plan fail or result in a delivery situation in which the furniture won’t fit through the door. If a Design Associate has not/can not visit the space to personally take the measurements, ensure the client is prepared to provide accurate data by reviewing best practices for measuring. STEP 1 : MEASUR ING & CREAT ING A ROUGH SKETCH & A F INAL SKETCH • Required tools: pencil, ruler, grid paper and a metal tape measure. • Sketch a rough outline of the room including wall, window, and door placements. Don’t worry about dimensions at this point. Use this outline to note all your measurements before drawing a floor plan to scale. • Measure the room from wall to wall in inches or centimeters: • Measure all doors, windows, and any other architectural features such as a fireplace from the outside trim. • Indicate whether doors open in or out. • Measure window heights, as well as the distance from the floor to outer trim of each window as you might want to put a console or bookshelves below. • Measure the main ceiling height. Measure and note any archways or other architectural features that may interfere with moving furniture into the space. • Note all measurements in the rough drawing.
