Goals for the New Year

2. What is something specific I can do that will help me take a step toward achieving that goal?

As we move into a brand-new year and many people scramble to keep their resolutions, I have been thinking a lot about how my own goals have led me to where I am today. Goal setting has had a dramatic impact on my life. For example, once, when I was a younger, I was looking at a picture of myself. I was struck by how short I was and that I was losing hair. I decided that if I was going to be short and bald, at least I was not going to be overweight and out of shape! I resolved to adopt a program of nutrition and exercise to stay in shape. I made a plan with specific steps to take and have generally stuck with it. Now, I get to the gym regularly, and while other people are snacking on chips or candy bars, I nibble on my trusty almonds. (My staff loves to make fun of me about those almonds). Over the years I have found an approach to goal setting that works for me. I call it the “Three Big Questions.” When I consider making a meaningful New Year’s resolution — or setting any goal — I ask myself these questions. 1. What is something I consider part of my mission in life? It has been said that most people who do not feel motivated and do not achieve their aspirations just have not found a goal that is inspiring enough for them. I think that is true. Choosing a goal that is truly important to me, something I have a real reason to achieve, keeps me motivated.

a schedule for taking action to reach that goal, the odds of success are not good. Telling myself that I will work on my goal when I get around to it usually means it will not happen. Using the “Three Big Questions,” one resolution I will be making for 2018 is based on our mission at Hearing Center of Long Island to improve people’s quality of life. We normally do this by providing customized products and professional services to improve our patients’ hearing and ability to communicate, but we want to help in any way we can. This year, I want to extend our positive impact further by providing useful, entertaining, and educational information that can help improve quality of life in many ways. This newsletter is one way to do that, though I have other plans in store, such as email updates and special reports. Stay tuned, and in the meantime, stick to those goals!

A goal without a specific strategy is really just a dream, not a goal. I find that even if I have to start by specifying very small steps toward a goal, it is much more productive than being vague. 3. When will I block out time to take specific steps toward my goal? Deciding on an inspiring goal and specifying steps I can take to reach it may make me feel good at first, but without

Happy New Year,

Is Your Lifestyle Retirement Ready?

Why Rightsizing Makes for Better Life After Work

Move Into a House You Can Fill Once all of your children have left the nest, you’ll often find that you don’t need as many rooms. Selling your home and moving into one that isn’t half-empty will generate some extra cash and help you to live more efficiently. As an added bonus, you’ll often find that a cozier home increases happiness. The less time you have to spend on home maintenance, the more you can devote to the activities you love. Change Your Mindset Too often, we suffer from the urge to “keep up with the Joneses.” If our neighbor buys something, we want it too. But to really rightsize, you should resist the urge to meet other people’s standards. Retirement should help you make the most of your life, not anyone else’s. Before you make a purchase, especially a large one, ask yourself what’s motivating

that more closely fits your new needs in retirement.” The earlier you can begin rightsizing, the more prepared you’ll be for the days when you no longer have an income from work. For most of us, what really matters when we retire is spending time with loved ones and having memorable experiences. Nobody’s greatest regret is not having enough stuff. With that in mind, here are a few tips that will prepare you for a fruitful and fulfilling retirement. Clear Out Unneeded Goods If you’ve been in the same home for years or decades, you probably have more stuff than you need. Start by discarding anything that’s broken, damaged, or simply not getting any use. You should also make sure you’re not acting as a storage unit for friends or family members. If they don’t have the space for something, it shouldn’t be your job to hang on to it. Eliminating clutter will free up your space and allow you to treasure what you have.

As you approach retirement, it’s important to make sure your lifestyle is tailored to fit the end of your working life. This concept, known as “rightsizing,” can make your savings last longer, which provides you with the freedom to enjoy your later years. Kathy Gottberg, author of “Rightsizing: A Smart Living 365 Guide to Reinventing Retirement,” defines the concept as “conscious choices for a better lifestyle

your decision. If it’s not going to make your life better, leave it on the shelf. What Our Patients Are Saying

I have been wearing hearing aids and having my hearing care at Hearing Center of Long Island since 2006. I started to realize I need help when, one day, my daughter was driving my car and said how loud my directional signals were. I didn’t know what she was talking about, because I never heard the signals. When my daughter told me I needed hearing aids, I didn’t believe her.

of hearing aids. When I got into my car and called my daughter, I told her I ordered hearing aids and she was so happy! I’m so glad I did, as my hearing problems have been solved. In closing, I never met a Doctor as caring as Dr. Larry. He and his staff really care about their patients. I would recommend Hearing Center of Long Island to anyone.

Shortly after that I was at my daughter’s house while she was baking cookies. She was going into another room and she asked me to take the cookies out of the oven when the timer went off. I was only about 10 feet from the oven and 2 • We’re listening to you.

Continuing Care

New Year’s resolutions are meant to improve one’s quality of life. But in the midst of goals to shed a few pounds, start exercising regularly, or read more books, one thing often gets overlooked — maintaining optimum hearing and the ability to communicate effectively. In addition to your regular resolutions, I would encourage all my patients to make their hearing a top priority in the coming year. Luckily, our complimentary continuing care services make that easy! If you use hearing aids, you should know that many typical breakdowns and problems can be easily prevented with regular professional maintenance. With a visit to Hearing Center of Long Island about every 6 months (completely free of charge), we can address issues with your hearing aids before they become a more serious problem and ensure that your hearing and communication abilities are optimized for the long term. Our continuing care services include the following steps. • Otoscopic evaluation. We’ll check the health of your ear canals and inspect them

for excessive ear wax. We use video otoscopes that allow you to see inside your own ear canals. • Hearing aid inspection and cleaning. Professional inspection and cleaning of each part of the hearing aid — from microphone and amplifiers to battery compartments and wax filters — which helps optimize hearing aid performance and prevent unnecessary breakdowns. We use special vacuum and centrifuge equipment for deep cleaning and can replace many hearing aid parts in the office. • Evaluation of hearing aid function. Most hearing aids record dynamic information about how they’re working and being used. We can review this information, and your audiologist can use this data to make adjustments to maximize performance. • Addressing patient concerns and patient counseling. Regular visits provide the ideal opportunity to ask our experienced audiologists questions, express concerns, or explain problems that we can solve.

Based on what we learn during your continuing care visits, we can provide other services at no charge, like hearing screenings or demonstrations of new hearing technology. We offer our continuing care services free of charge because we have found that regular service like this is vital to maintaining long-term optimum hearing. This year, don’t put your hearing on the back burner. Be sure you have your free continuing care visits scheduled every six months, and stay in control of your hearing and communication abilities!
