LIBRARY HELPS RETURN BEES, BUTTERFLIES TO COMMUNITY

community. Children’s services librarian Alicia Heinzle started recruiting residents for a small local team to supply a pollinator pot, whether on lawns, in pots, an old wheelbarrows or buggies. She was also on the hunt for native plants and flowers to add to the project. In a statement, the library said the project would give residents the chance to improve the community’s ecosystem. “The plantings provide habitat to support local insects like wild bees and butterflies, while making the neighbourhoods greener, healthier and wilder,” the library said in the statement. Anyone interested in assisting was asked to contact the Champlain Library at library@ bc-cl.ca.
Champlain Library will help return bees and butterflies to neighbourhoods after being selected for as a Butterflyway Ranger as part of the David Suzuki Foundation’s Butterflyway Project. Launched in 2017, the Butterflyway Proj- ect was designed to establish habitats for local bees and butterflies in communities throughout the country. In its first four years, 1,008 project vol- unteers planted more than 54,000 native wildflowers in more than 1000 pollinator patches acoss more than 100 Canadian communities. Le gouvernement provincial a annoncé l’approbation du financement du Fonds de développement économique régional (FDER) pour divers projets en Ontario. Trois projets dans l’Est de l’Ontario pourraient s’avérer bénéfiques pour les exploitations agricoles locales de Prescott-Russell et de Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry. Le Conseil ontarien de développement économique a reçu 70 000 $ en fonds RED pour élaborer un programme de formation virtuelle qui peut aider le secteur agricole. L’organisme Canadian Organic Growers recevra 14 350 $ pour organiser une série de séances interentreprises à l’intention des petites et moyennes entreprises d’agricul- ture biologique de l’est de l’Ontario. La Commission de développement écono- mique de l’est de l’Ontario recevra 64 400 $ pour mettre en place un plan de préparation et d’investissement des entreprises, embau- cher un consultant pour développer des pistes et offrir une formation aux partenaires du secteur agricole.
