A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 11
A reminder that we still have tickets available for the Waldegrave Sixth Form Open Evening on Thursday 24 Oc- tober. Come along to meet Mr Bannister, Head of Sixth Form, tour the Sixth form block, our new Learning Space, the creative subject spaces and the Performing Arts block. Visitors will also be able to speak to staff and current students about the A Levels we offer and life at Waldegrave Sixth Form. Don’t miss it and do get applications of interest in! This week the Year 11 House Captains for Franklin and Eliot houses presented assemblies to students across all year groups about the charity events we have run so far this term. They shared pictures, their experiences of each event, how much money was raised and the house points awarded for each event. Seacole and Pankhurst House assemblies will follow next week. Today we held a non-uniform day for students and staff, who were encouraged to wear the colour red in support of charity ‘Show Racism the Red Card’. Thank you to everyone who supported this event, voluntary donations to support the charity can be made via Parentpay. A massive well done to all the year 11 students who behaved perfectly this week whilst our Ofsted visitors were here. The students demonstrated their hard working attitude and courteous manners and we are very proud of them all. Next week will be the last week of this first term. It has been a long 8 weeks but the Year 11s have done a fantastic job of returning to school ready and raring for the year ahead. This week students will get the opportunity to clarify with teachers their areas to focus on for the upcoming mock exams just after half term. Students are encouraged to get involved in extracurricular activities, as such we wanted to highlight an incredible opportunity for students to get involved with the London Youth Games as a Team Member. Applications are open for passionate 14-24 year olds to represent their borough - see poster on page 4 for more information.
MRS ROOK, HEAD OF YEAR 11
BOOK OF THE MONTH
‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ - Margaret Atwood This book follows the Handmaid of a wealthy family as she struggles to fight for her rights in a dystopian society where women are used as breeding machines. While those in charge use threats to suppress the desires of the Handmaids, nothing can stop the desire she has to reunite with her daughter who was cruelly taken away as the repressive state was gaining power. Atwood combines fictional aspects with real world issues such as oppression of women and power divide to create a story that will make you simultaneously devastated and filled with motivation to ensure that we continue to fight for what all women everywhere deserve the right to choose. ~ Isla
