These designs have been in use in Eastern Europe for hundreds of years. They have roots in prehistoric pottery of the region, and the designs have found their way into all sorts of decorative applications—in textiles, murals, pottery and Easter Eggs! The Easter Eggs are called Pysanky, and hundreds of symbols are chosen from to give messages of hope, renewal, protection, and love on the individual eggs. This drawing contains the following: nets for protection, stags for strength and resiliency, plant life for renewal, triangles for the sacred feminine, and the sun for life force. This design was drawn with my former high school students when I was teaching them about Pysanky, and each student chose their own symbols and colors to create their own design.

I am a mixed media artist with many different concentrations. In addition to my large abstract oil paintings and colorful drawings, I create functional pottery. The creation of pottery allows me to create a one of a kind piece that is also something that can be used everyday. I love being able to work with
multiple mediums to express my creativity with multiple outlets.

I allow intuition to guide my creative process. While I often start spontaneously with dyes and paints dripping, splashing and creeping across the page, I finish my work with meticulous detail. My favorite moment, as an artist, is when a magical transformation happens and imagery suddenly emerges from the chaos of its creation. This feeling is beautifully addictive. It is also reflective of the world; our continuing struggle to find meaning, order and balance in the everyday chaos of our lives.

Prayer made visible. For children and mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters. For family for friends. For health and safety, prayers of compassion and empathy, fierce prayers and gentle prayers. For communities and the lost, for Mother Earth and Father Sky, for oceans, forests, flowers and crickets and creeks. For beauty, for peace, for love. For fires and food and keeping the faith for those who are wandering. The fabric begins as a blank cloth, waiting for our conversation to begin. We sing, we pray, we say "yes", "no", "this". From Wicked: “I've heard it said That people come into our lives for a reason bringing something we must learn and we are led to those who help us most to grow if we let them and we help them in return. Lydia Burris is a mixed media and multi- subject artist. She often compares her work to the sense dreams: a place of ambiguity, emotion and surrealism, peppered with snippets of symbolism and meaning. The mind and how it works is a recurring theme in her artwork, and organic shapes and layers appear often. In the studio she experiments with both 2D and 3D mediums. She playfully splatters, scrapes, constructs, destroys, and reconstructs her way through the creative process. Her subjects range from a deep darkness to delightful whimsy.

Inspiration is my natural state of being. A dirty rock is as meaningful as a well- crafted sonnet; a symphony the equal of wind caressing the twisted boughs of a tree. I quickly capture these isolated moments of inspiration. Then they must wait, impatiently, for me to respond to their shy invitations to help them reveal themselves. I am, quietly simply, my art’s facilitator.

Nancy’s work has most often centered on imagery that has personal meaning and is heavy with symbolism. During her time at Herron, Nancy has learned to communicate clearly with those symbols not only to use her artistic voice but to allow the viewer to have their own interpretation as well. Her work ranges through history form medieval themes to current events, The hope is to encourage conversations while not forgetting our history…all of our history, the good and the unpleasant. At Yosemite National Park, my favorite place in the world, fire is a natural process, preventing forests from becoming overgrown and unhealthy. This ancient fire-scarred sentinel at the edge of the Mariposa Grove bears a stark beauty, reminding me that Nature and Time deserve our trust. The Goddesses of Prophecy, the Fates, or in Old Norse mythology, the Norns, were female beings ruling over the destiny of gods and mankind. They spin the threads of fate at the foot of Yggdrasil, the World Tree. In Snorri Sturluson’s interpretation they draw water from the Well of Fate and pour the well water over Yggdrasil so that the branches avoid rot. While not all of my work has elements of mythology weaved into my brushstrokes, these two pieces Urd of the Norns and Skuld of the Norns encapsulate my awe at the beauty of Iceland, the stories of the land, and its cultural history. I created these two pieces as I felt my past and future fighting one another and imagined the faces of Urd and Skuld laughing at me as I struggled to choose what path to take. I wondered if they laughed because destiny is predetermined, or if because the notion of fate is all a big joke. E V E V E G G L E S T ON F A C U L T Y

R.A. Buys' current concentration is on more commercially/public friendly paintings and drawings he calls “Midnight Therapy”, which is what he shows regularly throughout the year. Years ago, he moved into his current house and he had no connection to internet, smart phone, or cable. He started drawing these stream of conscience faces in the late hours of the night, that have evolved over the years and continue to change. While a few of them are actual portraits of existing people, most of them are abstract and void of any recognizable features of a real person. He tries to strip away gender, sex, age, race or any other feature that we tend to intentionally or accidentally judge others on. Matter of fact he likes to look at his drawings as having the skin peeled back and them showing the colors, textures, and patterns that make up a person on the inside. Often, they come across alien. People say that they see African, Aztec, Polynesian and Celtic influences among others in his art; although this is all accidental as he relies on the moment to dictate what the patterns and images will end up looking like.

Ivy Tech is important to me as it was a foundation not only for my education but for my personal, professional and environmental endeavors. Ivy Tech taught me the basis of work and life balance, working among different age groups, gender identities and career paths. The Fine Arts program prepared me for experimentation with mediums, grant writing, critiques, installation and portfolio. I am forever grateful for my experience with the institution and would do it over again.

My view is that fine art photography goes beyond simple reality. It requires the artist to be inspired to a vision beyond the simplicity of the image captured by the camera. By accessing my Four Pillars of Artistic Process, the integration of Inspiration and Creativity helps provide the Vision. This expressed vision paves the way for me to achieve a Personal Style that concentrates on landscape and outdoor photography. By going beyond simple reality, I aim to better serve the subject and to accurately represent my emotions by reflecting them in the image; not merely producing a straightforward representation of the world as it appears to most. For me, photography is a satisfying blend of creativity, intellectual challenge, and craftsmanship in the service of creating my memories of these environments. My approach to every scene has the same goal: utilize colors, tones, contrast, and a calibrated workflow to convey my emotions. By doing this, I create memories of moments of serene beauty and then preserve them with museum quality archival materials.

I knew when I choose to go back to school that I would learn better in smaller classes. Not only did I find that at Ivy Tech but I found a community that welcomed me and all the other students where we were without question. As artists and as individuals. The fine art department became a home for me and gave me the confidence to move forward, on to Herron and my current position in production.

Both of these pieces were very indicative of my growth while at Ivy Tech. I’m still proud of them and it’s very fitting for them to return to Ivy Tech as a part of this fundraiser. The cow skull still life sent me down a path of various skull artwork, which influenced a lot of my more current nature and animal themes. The Egg Heads triptych was originally inspired by a passage from the John Green novel Paper Towns, which referenced cracks in a ship and the ability to let the light through. I’m sure I had a different title for that piece when I made it but I’ve since forgotten it and have always referred to it as the Egg Heads in casual conversation, so that’s what it’s called now. After Ivy Tech I went on to Herron School of Art and Design, where I received my Bachelor of Fine Art in Printmaking and Book Arts. I’m now almost 2 years post-grad and I’m gearing up to set up my first real home studio since college.

Once I got to Herron, I felt like I had a leg up compared to students who had been there since freshman year because I was exposed to a lot more means of making art. Stephanie Robertson and Ginny Taylor Rosner were pivotal in my development as an artist there and I can’t thank them enough for showing me what it looks like to have so much joy in what you do. I haven’t been able to do much art making since graduating but I’m confident that I’ll be able to come back to it soon because I’ll always be chasing that joy.
Ivy Tech represents an accessible, quality education for everyone, from all walks of life. It’s one of the few places you can expect to find a truly diverse student body that teaches each other just as much as the professors teach everyone else. Ivy Tech also helped me discover the medium of art that I plan to work with for the foreseeable future, (printmaking) and it was just happenstance, serendipity, and the broad range of classes offered by the Ivy Tech art department that got me there.

"My love for art, books and learning stems from my Grandfather, Harry Robie. He was a Quaker College English Professor, Debate Coach, and Native American Folklore expert at Berea College in Kentucky. When he retired, he opened a bookstore: Robie Books. Upon his passing he gave the bookstore to his employees, who maintain the shop to this day. While I have always been artistically inclined, my true purpose in the Arts came to me one morning while I was in college. My Grandfather apparently awoke in the middle of the night and, I guess feeling I might be having troubles, wrote me a long letter. Here is an excerpt: “Don’t ever forget where you came from, boy, and always remember to be nice. If you tie that advice with the golden rule, you capture the intent of all philosophy and religion. All of what I’m saying involves forgetting ourselves in the act of reaching out to others. I hope I’m right. I’ve also wondered whether that advice should also be the intent of art. If art is solely for self-expression, then why should anyone else pay any attention? But if art can build community, celebrate our common origins, articulate our highest aspirations, then it might be something worth dedicating time to. ..."

I enjoy working with the small classes of students to explore some of the media that I am most excited about, printmaking, book arts, and photography. It is exciting to offer students the opportunity to learn about and explore the these mediums, and assisting the students to find their own voice and build their skills. Seeing the growth of each student artist is a gift each semester.

For several years I have been interested in integrating organic shapes with man-made structures. I breakdown the boundaries between these elements, creating ambiguity. I love to work with bold colors while creating movement through careful color placement. Currently, I am exploring urban display windows merging the window content with the reflections of the city. Much of the current work is more image- oriented than my prior work, yet there remains a strong sense of bold color and flattened forms. I do all of my creative work digitally. I take digital photos of man-made structures and interesting organic forms. Using Photoshop I combine the photos, then manipulate, merge, add to, and eliminate areas, until I come to the final image. Then I use this completed digital image as a visual reference for paintings

My work depicts the emotional response expressed to describe controlled chaos. I use a variety of materials to unleash my imagination and to create abstract pieces to allow the viewer the opportunity to decipher their own story. Some of the emotions depicted in the work are derived from a duality within me to resolve internal emotional conflicts. For instance, my dad was one of my biggest supporters for creating art and pushed me to follow my dreams. Yet, when I was only 19, he passed away. It was extremely traumatic, and I had lost a huge part of myself. With my current work, I challenge the way in which I use materials to express color and line work. Using my intuition, I’m continuously experimenting with composition, and figuring out different ways to express emotions in my pieces. I allow my mind to slip into itself and think about my experiences and express them with unique shapes and forms. I distort objects to produce my own abstracted elements. Most of the inspiration for my work comes from looking at organic objects in nature, and then reproducing them in my own style. By combining these reproduced organic forms, and my emotions, I create my work of different abstracted worlds. While I enjoy working with a variety of different mediums, my favorite tool to use is the paintbrush and acrylic paints. These tools allow me to create different worlds on the canvas with a light, airy flow that reveals a blending of various emotions and ideas. Because paint is such a loose material that does not involve much thought into its application, it’s easier for me to zone out and center myself.

My artwork explores the relationship between pop culture and fine art. Instinctive skills coupled with academic technique make me a versatile artist. Process is very important to me. I currently work in acrylic paint on canvas and wood. Acrylic painting allows me to layer and rework my painting over and over again until I'm satisfied. My subject matter is either by client request or self inspired. I keep preliminary planning and sketches to a minimum. Once I start a painting, I rely heavily on intuition. I try to paint in the moment, while keeping in mind the concepts of color and design. I paint until I feel the piece is finished. Sometimes a painting is finished within an hour. Sometimes I rework a painting several times over the course of a year. Being an artist isn't just a hobby for me. It's my profession. It's my lifestyle. It's who I am. I continue to evolve as a person and so does my art. I hope you enjoy it. Peace.

As a child I always enjoyed putting puzzles together. I find a similar enjoyment my art, I watch the pieces fit together the colors and shapes coming together. I love choosing the colors, there has to be a dominate color and shape. The rest of the colors and shapes play a minor role yet they must harmonize. I am inspired by many of the great masterworks but feel a particular affinity with the German Expressionists.

Once Upon a Time, I was dead. I lived through my soul that stored my memories and dreams. Only my eyes picked through the window of the outside world. Clearing my lens and focusing on the true horrors I saw I blinked my eyes and caught the view, to then turn it into a reflective moment that needed to be expressed. The view traveled inside my mind and turned my hand to automatic creation. My mind and soul controlled my hand into replicating the beautiful realistic view from life into a fantasy, or an illusion of reality. As a new artistic challenge emerges in every artwork, my hand reaches for help from my mind, but my soul fights to be in full control of the final piece. Ripping open closed wounds caused my blood to drip into the art every time. The more blood I lost, the more I only became a tool ruled by the art wanting to speak out but I will never go away. I will forever survive in the corner of the art. My soul storing my memories and dreams will leave my body and long live inside the artwork I once created. I am now alive, Living Happily Ever After.
