Both of these pieces were very indicative of my growth while at Ivy Tech. I’m still proud of them and it’s very fitting for them to return to Ivy Tech as a part of this fundraiser. The cow skull still life sent me down a path of various skull artwork, which influenced a lot of my more current nature and animal themes. The Egg Heads triptych was originally inspired by a passage from the John Green novel Paper Towns, which referenced cracks in a ship and the ability to let the light through. I’m sure I had a different title for that piece when I made it but I’ve since forgotten it and have always referred to it as the Egg Heads in casual conversation, so that’s what it’s called now. After Ivy Tech I went on to Herron School of Art and Design, where I received my Bachelor of Fine Art in Printmaking and Book Arts. I’m now almost 2 years post-grad and I’m gearing up to set up my first real home studio since college.

Once I got to Herron, I felt like I had a leg up compared to students who had been there since freshman year because I was exposed to a lot more means of making art. Stephanie Robertson and Ginny Taylor Rosner were pivotal in my development as an artist there and I can’t thank them enough for showing me what it looks like to have so much joy in what you do. I haven’t been able to do much art making since graduating but I’m confident that I’ll be able to come back to it soon because I’ll always be chasing that joy.

Ivy Tech represents an accessible, quality education for everyone, from all walks of life. It’s one of the few places you can expect to find a truly diverse student body that teaches each other just as much as the professors teach everyone else. Ivy Tech also helped me discover the medium of art that I plan to work with for the foreseeable future, (printmaking) and it was just happenstance, serendipity, and the broad range of classes offered by the Ivy Tech art department that got me there.
