Being a first-generation Cuban-American, I use cultural color fields, as well as the aesthetics of street art to explore how one’s upbringing is directly influenced by ethnic heritage. By exploring the dualities between heritage and environment, the abstract chaos of my foundation layers builds an intense tactile landscape while creating three-dimensional spaces. This work explores how we are able to record and express our experiences through memories. Throughout the development of my work, the clarity of my forms in connection with the dense, tactile layers of bleeding physically controlled but visually chaotic drippings create such a vivid duality rich of action and construction. The gestural marks and movements of color create a field where memories or fragments of them exist. I use watercolor paper as a surface allowing levels of saturation to build a foundation for a future structure. The more I opened my mind to what was fluid internally, I came upon the idea to disassemble paper works and reassemble them visually. Combining pieces allowed me to make sense of the parts of memories linking them to forge an observed abstraction. My retrospection through different mediums is my model for painting.
