Examination Board: Edexcel Qualification: A level Teacher Contact: Mr Moore

Entry Requirements: A grade 6 or above in GCSE English Literature, History, Philosophy and Ethics (RPE) or Psychology.

What will I study? The A level course is divided into three components; two will be studied in Year 12 and one in Year 13. Component 1 – UK Politics: Studying how people and politics interact. Component 2 – UK Government: Studying the different political institutions and structures in UK politics. Component 3 – Comparative Politics comparing the UK with the American political system. Some units may be subject to change, based on examination board adjustments. All components are assessed by external examinations at the end of Year 13. Over the three components students will explore and critically analyse and evaluate areas of UK politics, UK government institutions and core political ideas. Am I suited to this course? You would be well suited to studying Politics at A level if you: — enjoy learning about the way that politics and government operate and have a genuine political interest in the world around you — are interested in understanding and comparing different political viewpoints and perspectives — like finding out about how the political world works and the actions of government within this — enjoy exploring points of view and expressing yourself through the written word.

What other subjects does it complement? Business, Economics, English, History, Geography, Psychology, Sociology – everything is politics! Where can it lead? Politics can lead to a wide range of university courses. It is equally acceptable as a general A level qualification for post-18 employment. There are a number of careers directly related to Politics: law, the civil service, teaching, careers in government archives, museums and art galleries, libraries and information services. Many sectors of employment highly value Politics students as they usually have good discussion and analytical skills and will be up to date with current affairs.
