TEN AREAS OF STRENGTH Bede’s Summer School is accredited by the British Council for the teaching of English as a foreign language in the UK. To obtain accreditation schools must be inspected every four years and meet strict criteria.

The inspection report stated that the organisation met the standards of the Scheme. The current British Council report expires 31 March 2027. Please visit our website to find out more.

Since our school began, Bede’s has had philanthropy rooted at its very core and many pupils have benefited from transformational bursaries, demonstrating that our core ethos of Compassion, Courage, Conscientiousness and Curiosity is a living and breathing part of everything that we do. In September 2022 we created the Bede’s Transformational Bursary Fund, and in June 2023 launched the Bede’s Development Foundation. The mission of this campaign is to create in excess of twenty 110% Sixth Form transformational bursaries by 2029; the Senior School’s 50th anniversary at The Dicker. A Bede’s transformational bursary is worth 110% and targets those from the most disadvantaged backgrounds and covers a pupil’s fees, transport, uniform and co-curricular programme so that they face no barrier to the opportunities Bede’s provides when they take up their place with us. Making our bursaries truly transformational. For every week booked at the Bede’s Summer School, £20 is donated to the Bede’s Transformational Bursary Fund,, which means together the Summer School will fund two 110% transformational bursaries a year for those most in need.

Bede’s Summer School | Staff at Bede’s

Staff at Bede’s We recognise the key role staff play in making the student experience at Bede’s Summer School special and memorable. That’s why Bede’s carefully selects our staff to ensure they are friendly and enthusiastic, with the skills, experience and passion to bring out the best from the students in our care.

Bede’s aim is to inspire students, widening their horizons and giving them opportunities to make international friendships, whilst also improving their English language skills.

Each centre has a minimum of four senior managers on site:

• Centre Director, who oversees all aspects of the school; • Academic Manager, who ensures the delivery of engaging and motivating academic programmes; • Welfare Manager, who looks after the students physical and emotional well‑being; and • Activity Manager, who is responsible for a varied, enjoyable and inspiring programme of sports, activities, academies, social events and excursions. Every member of staff receives a thorough induction to make sure they are fully prepared for their roles. Staff are residential, so students receive 24-hour supervision and many of the staff return year after year, which helps Bede’s to provide a high standard of pastoral care to students.

Safeguarding & Student Care

Safeguarding and the health and well-being of our students is the top priority across St Bede’s Trust Sussex. We are led by Annabel Hodge, Director of Safeguarding and Designated Safeguarding Lead, who oversees all the training of Summer School staff to ensure that everyone is aware of their role and responsibility in keeping students safe.

Students are looked after day and night by our on-site, dedicated staff. Each centre has a Welfare Manager and a team of House Parents who work closely together to make sure students feel happy and supported during their stay.

A qualified Registered Nurse is on site at each centre to provide medical care and dispense medicines. We ask parents/ guardians to notify us in advance of any pre-existing conditions and prescription drug needs. Many of the staff are first aid trained so they are able to deal with small incidents which may occur during activities and excursions. An emergency 24/7 contact number is provided to every student and parent/guardian.

Bede’s Summer School | Academic Programme

Academic Programme At Bede’s Summer School we deliver excellence in student academic programmes. Students learn and develop their love of English through stimulating lessons taught by qualified, enthusiastic and committed teachers. Each of our centres and courses has a closely defined age range that facilitates the design and delivery of a relevant, challenging and constructive syllabus in line with the Bede’s mission. Classes are multicultural and there is a 20% language cap on student enrolments to ensure a diverse international student community.

LESSONS Each course has a different academic curriculum tailored to the age range of the centre. The number of hours of English tuition also varies, depending on the course. Please visit the relevant course pages in the prospectus for further information. PLACEMENT TEST Students take a placement test on arrival to confirm their English level. They will then be placed into appropriate classes according to their level and age at the start of the programme. PROGRESS TEST Progress tests are carried out by the teachers at the end of each week to monitor and review students’ progress and make any necessary adjustments for the following week. LEVELS Under the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), eight levels are

criteria. They are carefully selected during the Recruitment process and undergo lesson observations and take part in continuous professional development. METHODOLOGY The teaching methodology is communicative and interactive, with creativity and personal expression encouraged. Students participate actively in enjoyable and engaging activities to encourage confidence in spoken English. OUTCOMES We present course completion certificates and academic reports, as well as achievement awards in Bede’s Leavers’ Ceremony, not just for academic achievements, but also to recognise effort and improvement in other areas. TUTORIALS Tutorials are available on Friday afternoons, giving students the opportunity to discuss their academic progress with their teachers in one-to-one meetings.

Exams

Bede’s Summer School offers a number of intensive exam courses to allow students to obtain a professional qualification to certify their English level in preparation for future academic study or for their future career. All exam courses are run as two-week programmes and include dedicated exam preparation instead of regular English lessons. Students sit the exam during their Bede’s course, normally in the last week.

The exam registration fees are included in the exam course fee. Special arrangements need to be requested with a minimum of 8 weeks advance, subject to availability.

On-site Activities

At Bede’s Summer School, we believe that students learn just as much outside of the classroom as they do inside of it. Our on-site activity programme is key to this approach. Students will enjoy a wide range of engaging activities that make the most of the high-quality facilities available at all Bede’s Summer School sites.

Each of our boarding school summer centres has an on-site indoor swimming pool, sports hall and fields, as well as multipurpose indoor spaces for showcases and workshops to host the wide array of activities that students will enjoy. Our superb sites allow us to offer varied and exciting activities and evening events in first class surroundings.

Bede’s Summer School understands that all students have different interests. With that in mind, our programmes are designed to have something for everyone that works to the social and cultural benefit of our students combining sports, arts and crafts and challenging competitions.

Excursions

Excursions are an integral part of the Bede’s Summer School programme and no two weeks are ever the same! We offer students a complimentary mix of visits to places of cultural and historical interest, as well as chances for sightseeing, shopping and amusement. With our carefully defined age ranges, excursions across the summer are tailored to the interests of students and are age‑appropriate. Excursions are organised either three or four times a week, depending on the centre. Midweek excursions are either half-day or full-day visits to local places of interest or to an amusement park or an activity centre.

Saturday excursions are a full-day trip and include a cultural, touristic or recreational visit to London. A sightseeing option is offered every week to ensure that students get the chance to experience the capital’s most famous landmarks. Sunday excursions are often more relaxing trips to a local Sussex seaside town such as Eastbourne, Brighton or Hastings. Students can walk along the beach, have lunch in the park or do some shopping whilst enjoying the sights and attractions on offer.

Day Course

LESSONS & ACTIVITIES Day students will join the residential students in classes which are mixed to ensure they are learning with peers of different nationalities and of the same language ability and age. Day students will also join the varied and exciting on-site activity programme offered as part of the residential courses, or can add any of the available Academies onto their Day Course. ACCOMMODATION We recommend that families stay in the local area near our schools, either enjoying Eastbourne, which is a popular seaside town on the south coast of England, with many seafront hotels offering beautiful views across the coastline, or taking advantage of being in the vicinity of the capital city of London near Royal Russell, which is easily accessible from Central London or south London and northern Surrey. There is a range of options for both locations to suit every budget, from self-catering apartments to deluxe 5-star hotels. Families need to book their own accommodation.

Bede’s Day Courses, offered at Eastbourne and Royal Russell, are a great non-residential option for students who are coming to England with their parents/guardians on a family holiday looking to enjoy the Sussex coast or a London summer experience. PROGRAMME Bede’s Day Courses run from 08.30 to 17.00 Monday to Friday (with a later return on Wednesday) and include the half-day excursion on Wednesdays at Eastbourne or a full-day excursion at Royal Russell. Students may add the evening option (includes dinner and evening social events) on a daily basis and may also join the Saturday and Sunday excursions (supplements payable, see Registration Form for details).

Parents of day students in Eastbourne can also study at Bede’s Summer School. ENGLISH LESSONS English lessons are available for the parents of Little Explorers in Eastbourne who would also like to improve their English. We offer lessons in small groups (see Registration Form for details). Classes are designed to improve parents’ general language skills, extend their vocabulary and better their understanding of grammar to improve accuracy when producing spoken and written English.

LEISURE PROGRAMME A Leisure Programme is included on two afternoons per week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) to give parents the chance to enjoy light activities and short trips in the local area. Examples may include: Afternoon Tea | Charleston House | Towner Art Gallery | Hastings Visit | Arlington Bluebell Walk and Farm Trail | Beachy Head Walk | Brighton Pier and Shopping in the Lanes | Eastbourne Sightseeing Bus.

Eastbourne Little Explorers

With a beautiful setting at the foot of Beachy Head, an area of outstanding natural beauty, our Eastbourne centre overlooks the sea and is the term-time home of Bede’s Preparatory School. This compact centre, founded as the first Bede’s School in 1895, has the feel of a family home and offers a safe and welcoming environment for our youngest students. The academic, social and cultural programme is carefully designed to educate and inspire our youngest learners. The Little Explorers course is full of lessons, activities, events and excursions that give students a great introduction to the UK. Lessons are in small classes with a syllabus and materials perfect for young learners. Activities make use of our outstanding facilities and are designed around the interests of younger students. The evening entertainment programme provides an opportunity for recreation and fun and is designed to immerse students in the English language and culture in a stimulating and innovative way. Excursions enable students to visit places of interest. Students will go on a half‑day trip on Wednesday afternoons and full-day trips on Saturdays and Sundays to our exciting range of historic, cultural and fun attractions and destinations.

ACCOMMODATION Our secure boarding houses have bedrooms accommodating 4–8 students that enable new friendships to form and help a sense of community to develop. Academics This carefully crafted programme, with 17½ hours of lessons per week, consists of English Skills, StoryTime and Explorations, where students learn English through stimulating subjects such as Science, Technology, Geography and History. Lessons improve students’ general language competencies (including grammar and vocabulary) while placing particular emphasis on communication, fluency and building confidence in the speaker. LEVELS & CLASSES All levels are welcome, starting from A0 (Complete Beginner) up to C2 (Proficiency). To ensure the best possible outcome in lessons, our academic team places students in classes based on their level, age and nationality. ENGLISH SKILLS These lessons are designed to improve students’ general language skills, extend their vocabulary and better their understanding of grammar, to improve accuracy when producing spoken and written English.

STORYTIME Working on several different children’s stories per week, StoryTime lessons stimulate students’ natural curiosity, develop their listening and speaking skills and extend their everyday vocabulary. EXPLORATIONS These lessons use CLIL methodology to develop students’ English skills through a range of stimulating subjects such as Science, Technology, Geography and History. BEDE’S HOLIDAY CLUB Bede’s Holiday Club is a day activity camp for local British children to spend their summer at Bede’s Eastbourne making friends with our Little Explorers! Summer School students have the opportunity to interact during breaks, afternoon activities and mealtimes with children from the local community. This will help build their confidence and provide excellent practice for their English skills in real life scenarios.

A Typical Day MON | TUE | THUR | FRI

07.30 WAKE UP + BREAKFAST Students will be woken up by the House Parents who will ensure they are ready for the busy day ahead. Students will then be able to select from a wide range of breakfast choices, where staff will be available to help those in need or who have any special requirements. 08.45 STUDENT MEETING A morning register will be taken and a meeting held for students to understand the plan for the day. This is a perfect chance for students to ask any questions or raise any concerns. 09.00 ENGLISH SKILLS 1+2 (WITH A 15MIN BREAK) English Skills focus on developing students’ general knowledge in English and ability to communicate effectively and accurately in everyday situations and different contexts. Students will be tested, challenged, supported and stimulated.

10.45 BREAK + SNACK 11.00 STORYTIME

StoryTime gives students the opportunity to share personal and fictional stories in a creative and stimulating way, enhancing their spoken fluency in English. Students become storytellers and story listeners, with the StoryTime teacher as their role model. 12.00 SIESTA/CHILL ‘N’ CHAT Siesta Time or Chill ‘n’ Chat is included to allow our youngest students to re-energise in preparation for a busy afternoon of sports and activities. 12.30 LUNCH Our Eastbourne centre offers a beautiful dining experience overlooking the sea. Students will be able to enjoy their lunch prepared by the award-winning Holroyd Howe. Staff will be on hand to help students. 13.30 EXPLORATIONS These CLIL-based (Content and Language Integrated Learning) lessons allow students to improve their English whilst at the same time explore a range of stimulating subjects such as Ecology, Space, Science and Technology. 14.45 BREAK

15.00 SPORTS + ACTIVITIES A register will be taken and a daily activity briefing will be given by the Activity Manager. Each student will meet with the Activity Leader and get the chance to burn off some energy by taking part in a choice of different activities. 16.45 FREE TIME 17.30 DINNER Students can choose from a specially designed nutritious dinner menu designed by Holroyd Howe. Summer School Staff will be on hand to help students understand the options available and make sure they

are eating a balanced diet. 18.15 SOCIAL EVENTS

Before the evening activities take place, staff will take the register and the Activity Manager will give a short meeting to plan for the evening. This is a great way for students to all get together. This could be a Treasure Hunt, Disco, Messy Games or something the students have chosen. 20.00 HOUSE TIME + SNACK 21.00 BEDTIME

Weekly Excursions WED | SAT | SUN

WEDNESDAY EXTENDED HALF DAY Students will break their regular weekday routine and leave the campus to enjoy a half-day trip to a local attraction such as Herstmonceux Observatory, Blackberry Farm or Drusillas Park Zoo and return to campus for dinner and their social events. SATURDAY EXTENDED FULL DAY LONDON Little Explorers head to London for an extra long day in the capital. Students will be accompanied by Activity and House Leaders and see all of the sights of Westminster, before having supervised shopping time or take in a West End Musical or heading to an attraction such as Shrek’s Adventure or London Sea Life. SUNDAY FULL DAY After breakfast, Bede’s Summer School students will embark on a full-day excursion. Guided by trained Activity Leaders, they will explore and enjoy cities such as Brighton, Hastings or Windsor or take in some of the best attractions England has to offer such as Chessington World of Adventures or Legoland and return in time for dinner.

The spacious campus, which welcomes up to 130 students per week, promotes a real sense of freedom within nature. Combined with the secure and safe location, this makes Windlesham the perfect site for young children who want to be part of a close and lively community. Young people’s innate curiosity about the natural world can be harnessed to engage them about their relationship with nature and present and future global ecological challenges. We offer a choice of two courses at Windlesham. Students can develop their English communication skills via Adventure Activities and Outdoor Learning with Adventures in English, or by engaging in 21st Century Skills as a Digital Trailblazer. Our fully-inclusive programmes include sports and activities every afternoon. Professional academies are available in a variety of sports and other activities. The evening entertainment programme provides an opportunity for recreation and fun and is designed to immerse students in the English language and culture in a stimulating and innovative way. Excursions enable students to visit places of interest. These include a cultural visit to a castle, museum or palace, a visit to a popular tourist attraction such as Big Ben, Madame Tussauds or the London Eye, or something more recreational such as a trip to an aquarium, zoo or theme park. Windlesham

Our Adventures in English course is perfect for students looking to improve their English both inside and outside the classroom, while enjoying the rich nature that surrounds the beautiful Windlesham school. This course has an ideal mix of adventure activities, excursions and lessons well suited for young learners and younger teens. Academics ADVENTURES IN ENGLISH There are 18 hours of lessons per week including English Skills, Explorations and Adventure Activities. All levels are available with a maximum of 14 students per class. Weekly tests are conducted to check progress. Lessons improve students’ general language competencies (including grammar and vocabulary) while placing particular emphasis on communication, fluency and building confidence in the speaker. LEVELS All levels are welcome, starting from A0 (Complete Beginner) up to C2 (Proficiency). ENGLISH SKILLS These lessons are designed to improve students’ general language skills, extend their vocabulary and better their understanding of grammar, to improve accuracy when producing spoken and written English. EXPLORATIONS These lessons use CLIL methodology to develop students’ English Skills through a range of stimulating subjects such as Science, Technology, Geography and History. ADVENTURE ACTIVITIES Adventure Activities offer students practical lessons outdoors, focusing on productive and receptive communication skills such as orienteering, problem-solving, survival skills or bushcraft activities.

A trailblazer is an original thinker at the forefront of discovery, who also leads others towards new and exciting possibilities. Our Digital Trailblazers course will similarly teach students to confidently navigate and take bold forward steps in a rapidly shifting global terrain through the effective use of a 21st Century Skills toolkit.

SPORTS & ACTIVITIES (AFTERNOONS) After lessons, students participate in a variety of sports and recreational activities. Students will be able to choose their preferred sport or activity. Examples are: Cooking, Dance, Drama, Football, Handball, Short Tennis, Swimming and Touch Rugby. SOCIAL EVENTS (EVENINGS) Social events are always the perfect time for students to mix and enjoy themselves with their new friends. At Windlesham they include: Disco, Egg Drop Challenge, Fashion Show, Karaoke, Messy Games, Mini Olympics, Talent Show and Treasure Hunt. EXCURSIONS Students taking Adventures in English and Digital Trailblazers enjoy a full-day excursion every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday to a variety of locations including London, Brighton, Windsor and more. Critical thinking and problem-solving are at the heart of learning and innovation. 21C Skills are designed to train students to solve the complex challenges and problems associated with living in a competitive, globally connected and technologically intensive world. 21C Skills offer weekly task-based lessons and workshops that use English for real purposes, placing particular emphasis on communication, fluency and building confidence in the speaker. LEVELS Five levels available from A2 (Pre-Intermediate) to C2 (Proficiency). Complete Beginners and Beginners are not accepted on the Digital Trailblazers course. 07.30 WAKE UP + BREAKFAST Students will be woken up by the House Parents who will ensure they are ready for the busy day ahead. Students will then be able to select from a wide range of breakfast choices, where staff will be available to help those in need or who have any special requirements. 08.45 STUDENT MEETING A morning register will be taken and a meeting held for students to understand the plan for the day. This is a perfect chance for students to ask any questions or raise any concerns. 09.00 ENGLISH SKILLS/21C SKILLS Adventurers in English will focus on developing their general knowledge in English and ability to communicate effectively and accurately in everyday situations and different contexts during the English Skills lessons. Digital Trailblazers will embark on a 21c Skills journey.

Our Windlesham centre offers dining in two sittings. Students will be able to enjoy their lunch prepared by the award‑winning Holroyd Howe. Staff will be on hand to help students in understanding all the options available. 13.30 ADVENTURE ACTIVITY/21C SKILLS The Adventure Activity takes in outdoor learning in this wonderful location for Adventures in English students whilst Digital Trailblazers are applying 21st Century Tools and methods in the classroom. 15.00 BREAK

15.30 SPORTS + ACTIVITIES A register will be taken and a daily activity briefing will be given by the Activity Manager. Each student will meet with the Activity and House Leader and get the chance to burn off some energy by taking part in a choice of different activities. 17.00 FREE TIME 18.00 DINNER Students can choose from a specially designed nutritious dinner menu. Summer School Staff will be on hand to help students understand the options available to them and make sure they are eating a balanced diet. 19.00 SOCIAL EVENTS Before the evening activities take place staff will take the register and the Activity Manager will hold a short meeting to plan for the evening. This is a great way for students to all get together. This could be a treasure hunt, disco, messy games or something the students have chosen. 21.00 HOUSE MEETING, HOUSE TIME + SNACK 22.00 BEDTIME

Weekly Excursions WED | SAT | SUN

WEDNESDAY FULL DAY Students will break their regular weekday routine and leave the campus to enjoy a full-day trip to attractions and destinations of a cultural, historic or amusement nature. Where possible, course outcomes and tasks will be available to continue student learning outside of the classroom. SATURDAY EXTENDED FULL DAY LONDON Saturday excursions are a full-day trip and include a cultural, touristic or recreational visit to London or another place of interest such as Buckingham Palace, London Eye, National Gallery, Tower of London and Westminster Abbey. A sightseeing option in London is offered every week. SUNDAY FULL DAY After breakfast, Bede’s Summer School students will embark on a full-day excursion. Sunday excursions are often more relaxing trips to a local seaside town, such as Brighton or Portsmouth, where students will visit local attractions like the Brighton i360 viewing platform or Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. They will return in time for dinner and social events in the evening.

Royal Russell School, set in a 110-acre university-style campus, boasts stunning architecture, and is conveniently located in south London. Up to 170 residential students each week enjoy the modern on-site sports facilities, spacious classrooms and up-to-date boarding houses. Our London Explorers course is perfect for younger students looking to improve their English both inside and outside the classroom, utilising the amazing nature that surrounds this beautiful school and the unique positioning so close to London. Academics LONDON EXPLORERS LEVELS Seven levels are available at Royal Russell from A1 (Beginner) to C2 (Proficiency). Complete Beginners are not accepted on this course. ENGLISH SKILLS These lessons are designed to improve students’ general language skills, extend their vocabulary and better their understanding of grammar, to improve accuracy when producing spoken and written English. This innovative study programme, with 20 hours of lessons per week, is specially designed for teenagers who want to discuss the greatest global challenges as leaders of the future and take action to transform our world.

ENGLISH FOR THE FUTURE The morning English for the Future sessions develop the students’ English language proficiency across the four skills with a particular focus on the global problems we are facing nowadays. As part of the programme, students will develop their presentation skills by watching TED Talks and preparing their own talks as well as broadening their vocabulary related to sustainability and global issues. FUTURE THINKING These sessions prepare students for ‘Friday for the Future’ debates between two classes. Through a series of practical workshops on internet research and critical thinking, students will gather sufficient information on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and analyse it in order to discuss and offer practical solutions to global problems. PROJECT FOR THE FUTURE Over the course of a week, students will research and discuss one of the 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals such as ending poverty and hunger, protecting the planet, promoting and fostering peace, achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls. Then they will present their conclusions by way of writing a blog entry or a news story, conducting a survey and analysing its findings or presenting a sketch or performance. DAY PROGRAMMES Both of our residential Royal Russell courses are also available as Day Programmes. With easy access from Central & South London, families can enjoy educational holidays in the UK’s capital city.
